From the looks of it, it seems that it is absurdly top heavy.

Was that travesty designed by a credentialed NA? I think not. Is the builder complicit in the disaster? Let us hope that the builder had some ironclad disclaimers legally recorded.

I agree it looks crazy top-heavy. The density change from below waterline to above would have to be wild. I can't imagine this boat could be safe unless they tried to float it without engines. The waterline is about 5% of total height.

I would think that the 82K# of fuel and the engines would have made it stable. Looks like not enough weight down low.

Of course it looks like those absurd cruise liners with too much tophamper.

It also depends on "how" it was launched too.

But in general launching is not straightforward at all. One must check the GM as the water touches and progressively until the vessel is floating free, using the as launched estimated displacement and LCG and VCG. What you find it that there is a localised "sweet spot" where the GM is very low or sometimes negative in the launched condition, and thus, must be mitigated. If you don't...you're gonna end up with a nice news story like above!

I wonder if the owners manual advises against having less than 50% full tanks?

    $10 million for a 90 foot boat ? Is it 18-carat or 24-carat ?

It was a question I was going to ask of the forum members.

When you look at boat designs sometimes you see photos of the finished boat and sometimes just the drawing, indicating it is a boat design that no one has built yet.

The question is, is it safe to build a boat directly from a design.

I guess this thread answers that question.
