? on type of paint

i was watching a video on you tube about a wooden boat build ( kentucky afield) and was needing to know what type of paint they used on the outside of the boat

 

Depends on the construction. You can use any alkyd paint in traditional construction

 

such as what brand

 

Rustoleum, Behr, Sherwin Williams

 

Use a rag soaked with some denatured alcohol and rub the surface. If the color comes off on the rag, it's an acrylic, but if it doesn't it's an alkyd or polyurethane.

Only on the paint - no body parts or electronics should be involved . . .

The brand of paint doesn't matter, just the type of paint (alkyd, acrylic, etc.).

 

I assume "denatured alcohol" is what is called "methylated spirits" here.

 

denatured? Years ago, I suggested to my sister, the name deniece for her new baby daughter.

Yes, methylated spirits and denatured alcohol are the same thing.

 

Its a bit like making Holy Water - you just get ordinary tap water and boil the Hell out of it !

 

Denatured alcohol is pretty simple stuff.

It's ethanol, usually with a modest amount (~10%) methanol added to screw it up in regard to folks getting a buzz. They also can add other stuff like MEK, methyl isobutyl keytone, isopropyl, acetone, etc.

The use of these predominately keytones as additives, means you can't distill it back to alcohol, if your a clever backwoods fruit loop, looking to make a home brew.

 

I watched the same video, and wondered myself what type of paint they used? No one in video says, no one in comments say it. But they painted it in camo which had me thinking it might be oil base? But sure like to know myself as I am going to build one similiar to this design.

 

I haven't watched the video, but why couldn't it be acrylic?

 

Most spray can camo is acrylic, isn't it?
