i am wanting to do a easy to build design power cat. i want to use mercedes om617 turbo diesels from mid 70s mercedes 300d. with jet drives. i want these motors because they are max rpm 5300. cheap and very reliable. jet drives for shallow water use and efficiency. 30-40ft length with all water fuel and drive system located in the twin hulls. hence the mercedes motors to help keep things narrow. i want flat bottom with wave piercing bows to make building easier. but wide and tall enough to walk in the hulls. as they will also be used for sleeping. thinking 4-5 feet wide all wood covered in 10lb fiber and resin. any hints or tip helpful

But what do you want the boat to be capable of? What sort of conditions do you want to use it in? What is your upper price range? you need to spell out your requirements/hopeful desires just a bit more.

calm river or rough water capable. extended range cruiser. speed about 10-15 knots. use all wood construction for low cost. 1000 mile range minimum able to be handled by 1 person

Or perhaps you might have a look at the photos I posted on this subject thread about floating accommodations.

I have a lot more info coming on that subject thread, including some smaller units, and some pretty simple construction methods.

You might even power your vessel with an external tow craft like I just posted here...pretty innovatively built from old truck parts and simple steel hull.

    Flat bottom AND wave piercing?

Flat bottom to get up on the plane....then what are the wave piercing bows for?

If you're planing the bow won't be piercing waves. And wave piercing bows are going to waste a lot of space in a 40 foot vessel.

Why don't you drop either the flat bottom or the wave piercing bows?

Water-jet propulsion would be inefficient at 10-15 knots cruise, and the 1000 mile range is out of reach, imo. I get the feeling this project is based on the seeming attraction of cheap second hand car engines, but they won't be that cheap the time they are properly marinized, and mated with expensive jet drives. If you have saved any money after all that, look forward to losing it with increased fuel use.

What is the hp rating of your engines ? And really, saying fuel use does not bother you, is very close to saying "money is no object" is it not ?
