    Wynand N Retired Steelboatbuilder

As all know I retired completely from boat building and boats in general a couple of years ago. My life was in great peace and in general I was a content and happy man with my retirement status, or in short, be my own man, fish when I want to or just to loaf around.

However, a very nice fellow was chasing me since 2008 - inspected the steel Dix43 I had under construction at that time, disappear a year or so, then shows up periodically, then visited me a few weeks ago and decided he want to proceed and have his boat build.
After so many years feeding a person's questions you start to have doubts about him really wanting a boat and out of decency, spent some time and be nice which of coarse takes nothing away from someone.

Last week it was arranged that I go visit him in Manie's backyard to discuss the boat in question and I should bring a boat building contract along to be inspected. Went down for the weekend to humor him, had a few bottle of good SA red wine, fabulous Mauritian dinner made by his beautiful French speaking Mauritian wife, discuss the boat and I left the following day leaving contract with him.

Yesterday, on Monday morning sharp I opened my email as usual and there it was in PDF - the contract signed and also proof of electronic deposit payment and first payment thereafter:eek: IOW, Im in ***** again so to speak:(

The boat is a small vessel - 8.0m (26ft) excluding bowsprit - "traditional" multi chine steel boat with twin keels, transom hung rudder on full skeg. Rig will be gaff.
Im building the boat to complete sail-a-way stage and the boat is actually trailer-able and Im building the twin axle trailer as well.
The boat is frameless construction and the jig get fitted on trailer main frame and when boat is done, trailer supports fitted, building jig removed and trailer axles and wheels fitted and boat towed away. In short, boat get build in upright position on trailer.

Nice about this contract and compact size of the boat is that I have a big plot behind my home and neighbours quite a distance from the boat I will build it in my back yard.

For next 3 - 4 months In going to be a busy grumpy guy, but hey, thats life. Never say never...

Hehehe...., been there - done it all! Glad to see you here again Wynand!

Funny these guys that wander in and out the workshop in sort of a never ending pregnancy. Just when you have dismissed them as eternal dreamers, they are ready to give the "go" sign, including the initial payment.

I had just about cleaned my workshop, got rid of heaps junk, sold off a couple of designs and prepared to sit back and scratch the dogs for a while when a similar thing happened; local entrepreneur who has slowly expanded his activities in the archipelago here and needs a workboat finally made up his mind. So back into the coverall!

Guess the point is, that the clever fellas, who really make money in this biz, they keep away from the "specials". But the forever curious oldtimers, like us, take up the challenge of creating one-offs. The bonus is, of course creating some fresh synapses in our brains, keeping us healthy, albeit a bit grumpy....

You can put me through the Chinese water torture, on a stretch table, pull my finger nails out, throw me in hell, but no way will I ever touch a BS

Wiley, that name or initials are only whispered in the darkest corners of hell, and the simple mentioning of it here on the forum make people like, MikeJohns, Ad Hoc, Jeff the moderator and even yours truly and others shiver our timbers and hide in fear:eek:
You should be made to walk the plank or keel hauled for this sin you committed.:D

No, Manie is a boat builder par excellence himself:cool: But as for money, Manie is king, his name better collateral than Fort Knox and its contents...

However, Manie is not as bad as the newspapers says once you know him.;) Wish it was for him because we would have been on all time high with beer and whiskey flowing like the waters of the mighty Vaal river.

I know - but I'm bored. It's never good when I get bored.

ATM I've got paint drying, Tung oil drying, glue drying - and the days are getting shorter and cooler, so the drying takes longer.

Therefore I'm bored. Fortunately I have a big backlist of machine shop stuff to do that doesn't make a pile of fine dust, so I may as well start on some of those jobs. Soon.

Mike is a bit....... busy/preoccupied..... at the moment.

Incidentally, congratulations and have fun. Post pix. It'd be good to see photos of how I *should* have done things.

Hi Manie, Taipei is 3,255kms from Singapore, the same distance from Cape Town to the southern parts of Lake Tanganyika. I suggest we meet in the middle as that's a hell of a walk.

Trust everyone's well, I don't seem to have time to post on forums these days. My only news is I imported a small Achilles 24 from the UK to Singapore which is finally registered (what a frustrating and ultimately expensive exercise that was...) so at least I'm back on the water with my sons scaring the life out of passing ships.

    Cheers
    Richard
