Pretty cool idea and nice looking. Not sure how practical a less than ten minute run time would be though.

    10kWh x 80% usable capacity = 8kWh / 48kW power = 0.1667h x 60 = 10 min.
That's assuming 100% efficiency in the motor drive. I think you should shoot for more battery capacity.

Why two motors and surface drives and not one?

If you looked at the award site you would see that his concept is far more realistic than the other winners. At least he appears to understand how boats work. The others have numerous blatant mistakes and only demonstrate the ability to model and render pictures that look like boats to the untrained eye.

This contest has no connection to reality. Draw sonething hardly feasible and You will surely win. Approach not for yacht professionals who work in the industry and BUILD BOATS, buy for newcomers and students.

And I think there is nothing wrong with student competitions but of course the judging criteria could be more founded to reality

I might agree with you guys except: Remember the idea and concept cars of the past and a few that are still done. They were not practical either but were not a waste of time. If students don't try out their wild-*** ideas in contests like this where would they get a chance to think beyond off the shelf stuff? I don't much like the winner and it is certainly not practical but you have to admit it offers a lot of room for creative thought.

It's hard to know what the public will latch on to. A few years ago the Pontiac Aztec was laughed at as being plug ugly. Now we havet he Soul and other similar offerings that make the Aztec look like the winner of a beauty contest and the same public is buying them.

I think the difference there though is that in cars the designers job is being a stylist. And its extremely rigid industry - the concepts are wild but the actual cars - if you move the windshield 1 cm its a BIG DEAL.

With boats - especially small craft - the styling and function are more inherently tied together. Still I get the idea of getting wild stuff out there BUT there is nothing worthy in _just _ wild ideas. And it can give totally unrealistic idea to the wannabe designers of what actually matters.

this one was short listed for a design award.

I mean what the heck. It had ecological somewhere in the description too. Nevermind that it has afterburner jet engines - in totally wrong location, aerodynamics that would not even close to be feasible, extremely inefficient use of space. Sleek design and hip trendy words. Total failure my the judges/professors to cheers something like that imo.

The OP is a student. He won the student division award and his concept does not have any glaring conflicts with reality.

The other divisions and winners are professionals. Their submissions are so flawed as to be offensive to anyone dedicated to making good watercraft and they should know better. I think the problem is designers who want to do something "NEW!!" so they take the easiest route and design something that has never been done BECAUSE it doesn't work. There is an intrinsic disrespect -'form does not follow function... looks are more important'. These designers have no reality to consider, no responsibility beyond endearing themselves to customers. Engineers and NA's naturally reject them because they turn good customers into useless PITAs that must be avoided for liability sake.

Well spoken. The young ones need chances of course. But when it comes to the safety of our customers, it will become a little more serious. The other designs of 'har har har' on Grab CAD do not look convincing at all.

Harun: You need to study the basics first. A shape only does not make an entire boat.

No, its probably doable but it would have no market. I don't see an innovation in the mix just a boat that can be used for a very little time.

The winner "Airo" is by product design students. The foldability of the moth like hull is ineteresting. Rigid sail is probably retarded - but I still don't see it as "that bad".
The amphibious thing is horrible. Lopsided "Lyfe" - well the designer's name is Ferrari - do you need more?
