Doug, can you point out where the forward rudder on Oats is now? I've been googling for pics of her current state and none of them seem to show a forward rudder despite other foils being visible. See for example

The forward rudder is also not showing on detailed drawings of the current configuration from Chevalier Taglang. The sketches on that site clearly show the forward rudder in 2005 but not in 2007 or later. See http://chevaliertaglang.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/2013-sidney-hobart-race.html

It's clearly shown on every picture you posted. I believe you called it a canard. Thats what the forward rudder on CBTF boats was called. Maybe it's just a daggerboard now-it's retractable in any case. I could swear that I read just a few days ago that it was a rudder-they had a forward rudder but would have had to remove it and put in a case to make it retractable. Thats the best I can do. I think I read in the new boats section of Seahorse that there was a new CBTF boat under construction, but I couldn't swear to it.
It's a great, fast technology. But the use of lifting foils as on Beau Geste and others may be faster.

The hull now boasts the new hydrofoil wing, a retractable forward rudder, two retractable daggerboards, the canting keel, and the conventional rudder at the stern.

and I'm sure there are other references as well....

We are getting a beam reach ( very warm ) winds in excess of 20 knots here in Hobart, so if that's what they are getting, its no wonder they are doing so well.

Looks like I will be down at the docks later tonight to watch the finish.

Shame Investec aren't closer - a tacking duel up the river is always a lot of fun.

Go Perpetual Loyal !!! and Gavin Brady.

30 knots plus northerly close to eastern Tasmania coast forcast. 30 knots plus westerly western tasmania.

If they get the westerlies in the river the mast that holds maybe, who knows.

Doug looks like I owe you some dollars and beer unless oats hits a submerged object. Gavin is flying as well. Good Luck.

Pitty only 3100 viewers so far on this international worldwide site, many revisits by same viewers. Its really captuating the world.

Just as well for your posts other wise it would be unknown.

I'm not the one stirring and casting doubt on the claims made about the race's popularity. To say that the claims about the number of people who attend the event are "BS" does seem simply saying that those who make them are lying.

It does seem that the claim that millions of people watch the race may well be true given that a couple of million people watch sport at that time on TV in Australia alone, as proven by ratings. Nowhere does it claim that there are millions of people watching the start live on TV OUTSIDE AUSTRALIA.

The Hobart does seem to attract significant interest from sailors around the world, judging from my chats to sailors from Holland, the UK, South Africa, the US etc.

How much interest does it get from other spectators around the world? It's being covered by the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/24/sports/a-sailing-familys-next-challenge.html?_r=0 etc); the UK Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/dec/28/sydney-to-hobart-wild-oats-xi-in-control-of-race); Arab News (http://www.arabnews.com/news/499361); the major French paper L'Express (http://www.lexpress.fr/actualites/1...rend-la-tete-a-perpetual-loyal_1310228.html); and has been reported by the German paper Bild, the #1 German paper AIUI.

So given that these major papers DO cover the race, it seems that it does attract interest from many places outside Oz. I assume 7 probably know where the feed that they charge for is going and the CYCA or Rolex probably take good care to measure ratings. Of course for many spectators the Hobart start is just a pretty backdrop at a time of year when it's cold in the northern hemisphere and party time down here.

And where is there any evidence that I have said anything untrue, apart from making the error (which I have admitted) of thinking that the new BG had a fixed keel like the earlier ones?

PS re "Your first paragraph also can be said about the fastnet race"

    Can it? Evidence please.

Yes, the Fastnet gets many more boats. There are various reasons for that.

PPS - Dunno why cricket is relevant but we're currently leading the world's 3rd ranked team 3-0, and we're not sitting third last in the test rankings.

In one of them, Iain Murray states that ""Originally the boat was fitted with a forward rudder in her CBTF configuration but this was replaced by a pair of dagger boards," said Murray. "Over the years we have struggled to sail upwind in the light so a small canard was fitted forward to help with this and to reduce the amount of lee helm that the boat develops. We tend to use this up to 10-11 knots of boat speed."

The forward CB may be steerable but that would normally be called a retractable rudder wouldn't it? And if you add the daggers and only use the canard in certain conditions it seems to be getting away from the CBTF concept a bit.

WOXI is set to win! Congratulations to the guys on Wild Oats XI !
    From Yahoo7 Sydney:
Wild Oats bagged an historic second triple crown in the 2012 edition crossing the line first and winning the overall handicap as well as setting a new record time of one day, 18 hours, 23 minutes and 12 seconds.

It was its sixth line honours victory in the race and if it wins this year's edition it will equal the race record of seven line honours wins, set by the yacht which sailed under the names Kurrewa IV and Morna.

I succumbed to the wide screen, wall mounted plasma screen instead of the 5 deep crowd for the finish.

Terrific aerial shots, harbour views, crowd scenes etc etc.

I got sick of the inane "Whats the atmosphere like where you are ..." comments of the reporters, obviously trying to keep away from 'dead air'

Sometimes the images dont need words - but not in TV land.

Impressive - lets see, if they say 3% increase, its probably close to 7 %.

You dont want those handicappers getting too frisky, do you ;)
