OC, my info comes from here: http://rolexsydneyhobart.com/standings/ -
things change rapidly. Right now(1 minute ago) WOXI was 1 knot faster and 5.4 miles behind Loyal-shes caught up about half the distance she was back last night. Beau Geste in 7th for line honors. Giacomo , the Volvo race winning 70 footer is hanging in there.
    =============
UPDATE: only 4 miles separate the boats now-Wild Oats seems to be closing in.......
UPDATE: 7:47pm 2.2 miles between them ,WOXI still faster. Ragamuffn shows a big jump in speed-up to 14 knots....

    Go Wild Oats XI !!!

According to postion both boats on the same longitude but only one nm miles apart despite DTG figures, which could mean seconds in latitude as they the secs are not quoted in 4 dec places as per a gps reading.

Both boats are in head winds SSE to S.

Dickson sometime between now and 1800 hrs time will encounter the same winds.

They have entered [ in ] Bass Stait now.

Dickson is about to enter Bass Strait.

OK, at least two of us thought that you were calling BS on the number of spectators, not AJ's reporting.

In addition the whole coverage wording.

Whatever the results of the Rolex Sydney Hobart 2013, one thing is certain - when the race starts at 1pm on Boxing Day it will capture the imagination of sailors and spectators worldwide and millions more tune into the action on TV and online!

By the way. Was there 600, 000 there to watch the start physically. The 600, 000 was a speculative figure before the start.

I was also pointing in how can it capture the so called millions when the TV coverage was difficult to find, plus online as seen by the posters.

The tracker was not working. A lot did not pick up the TV coverage. NZ it was not live when in the past 90 mins has been.

currently Loyal and WOXI are within 6 miles of each other with Loyal going about 3 knots faster. BG and the others are some 30 miles behind but look to have a better course to breeze over WOXI and Loyal, but currently are slower.

Meh - hardly evidence of DSS being a dramatic factor.

There has been more than one Sydney Hobart, y'know. During those earlier S-Hs the NSW police have closed off many roads to allow people access to the shoreline. NSW Maritime have provided many boats to lay markers to keep the spectators out. Marine Rescue have provided many patrol boats. Local councils have provided rangers to monitor, parking officers to control parking, and garbos to clean. Lions Clubs etc have provided shuttle buses. Commonwealth authorities have allowed access to land for cars and spectators. Charter boat companies have their boats out.

Have you considered that after doing all this and more for decades, the people here involved in this massive operation may have a better rough estimate of the number of spectators than someone in a different country has?

TV was difficult to find? What? Do you think millions of Aussies find it impossible to walk into the living room, press the "on" button, and switch to 7? Newspaper reports today say that "the Nine Network's coverage of the start of the fourth test peaked at about 2.8 million viewers nationally". Given that it's well known that the Hobart is run during the lunch break of the cricket and that both are iconic events here, it's not hard to see that 71% of cricket watchers could have seen the Hobart start - that's your "millions" there for a start?

How many people watched the start on 7? Do you have access to the ratings figures? If you do not - and I think it's safe to assume that you do not - how do you know that someone is lying?

Sorry, but sitting back in another country and slinging **** at those in a better position than you are to know what is happening looks a bit odd.
