2nd choice is that your requirements are not possible with the amount of sun that strikes the earth

I didn't mean to sound harsh, but as an engineer, an important skill is figuring out how t apply your tools

You included "and we are using a charger and batteries too".

If you are looking at performance (speed), go look to the electric remote control (RC) vehicles for inspiration.

Search the web and you will find very high performance RC boats, planes and cars. The power available using high tech motors and rechargeable batteries is pretty incredible compared to the stuff that I played when I was a kid. I have seen planes using motors scavenged from CD players that put out more thrust than the weight of the plane.

A fast 1 meter RC cat (or even tri) with light weight solar panels for recharging batteries should really not be that big of a challenge. However, as a class project, you do need to "do the math" yourself.

Well, those smileys are appropriate. I don't know whether to laugh or cry either.

What is it you will be engineering?

Zain, if you are going to use a charger and batteries, what do you need the solar for? as PFlados points out, you can easily get a very very powerful motor and rechargeable batteries that can drive a 1 meter boat at 80kph. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LZ1007**&P=0

Then glue a cheap solar panel to the top of it and call it good to go.

What you have left out is the other design criteria. What defines "success"? Here I made a mistake. When you wrote "solar powered" - I assumed that you meant

"no external power source other than solar".

If you can charge the batteries from an external source - the rest doesn't matter.

We will charge batteries from the solar source...External source doesn't make it Solar powered boat...:)

by the way important thing is the design not solar because this is a mechanical project..

ok then if you are using the solar as a recharger, then as an engineer - what is the correct design parameter question to ask here? (Socratic dialogue here)

good luck... the operative question you need to ask that you are missing is what percent of time do you need to run and what percent of time you can charge. For example if you need a 1hp motor and you can only charge it at 1 watt, that means you get to run for 30 mins per day and charge the rest of the time
