Advice on a boat i saw in Alexandria

These type of hulls are intended mainly for sailing lateen sails. It is fish shape, heavy on the bow and not suitable for speed as it will be an uphill climb.

The Jalbut, Jalibut, Jelbut (depending on who pronounce it) type became the most suitable for powering because of its low draught and narrow beam and became the early favorites. It has its own following and locals form clubs racing these type of boats. The local club should be able to know the max Hp it can carry. My guess is the same as everybody else. 50 Hp.

The Jalbut is about 30-33 feet in length.

Note: the boatl was pulled out of the exhibit as the experts claimed it was "adulterated". It is a racing Jalbut, not a true sailing Jalbut.

 

Sorry but I can't see plywood in this photo. It all looks like timber to me.

 

It looks like good quality too, clear with no knots or splits.

 

Looking at more photos, it doesn't look like plywood planking.

Could this possibly be two different boats?

The photo where the wood has been filled and looks like ply, has all kinds of bandsaw marks on the face, but this stuff looks planed smooth.
Would they possibly put ply below the waterline and good looking wood above, for economy?

 

I think boatdesign net contributors are being too critical. The boat looks well built with quality materials. Its worth having a closer look and speaking with the builder.

By golly you are right. I pulled up RX's photo by mistake. The ones you showed clearly are not plywood, though.

Yeah, I was already notified and acknowledged that fact.

 

It always surprises me to see boatyards like this with wood stored outdoors in uncovered, unsupported ragged piles. I can carefully stack it under protection and then when I need it, it's almost too crooked for firewood.

 

Its supposed to be mogano wood (as per the builder).

I might have mixed some photo's up but there is about 7 years between construction time and the photo's i took.

To be very honest i will not find anything resembling proper construction documentation and such in Egypt. Now my choices are either go with a fibre built boat imported from abroad (and the prices are beyond my budget a few hundred times over) or work my @$$ off and find a semi decent wood boat to work with. (Much more affordable and surprisingly some are well built but its probably 1 in 10).

I am in a bind and i have no choice but to dig deep and try to find something that works.
Unless some one has a relatively inexpensive 14-16 meter boat that i can buy !

I guess this boat is way overpriced not a secure investment and is a big risk. The boat looks good and could be appealing but the disadvantages out weight the advantages.

I got a quote for a conventional wood plank boat 14 meters for 23,000$ with out engine, electronics or equipment.

I am starting to think it would be much cheaper to get a boat built and shipped to Egypt !!

So it still stands i need a 10 - 14 meter (32- 46 foot) for fishing / rental in open water .
