From SA regarding the upcoming race:

This years fleet including a couple of late model Volvo 70's ,five 100 footers including Loyal(ex "Speedboat) and a couple badass downwind monsters-Ichi and the sparkly new Botin 80 "Beau Geste"-and even the full fleet of Clipper 70's, 2013 is looking like the best Hobart big-boat fleet in a decade.

Not mentioned but the star of the show, without a doubt, is the 100' Wild Oats XI-multiple time Sydney-Hobart first to finish winner now equipped with DSS. First time any boat with DSS has raced the Hobart. A new hundred footer designed from scratch with DSS may be here in a year or two.

If this interview is accurate Team Australia and Team Vidaphone(ORMA 60 trimarans)
will start after the S-H fleet starts and head in the same direction. This could be real good if it actually happens which I hope it does!

It's all on like Donkey-Kong. It'll be a great race to see TA and TV make a run for it.
Didn't Steinlager 1 do it. I remember comments from Peter Blake about having to throw an oil bag out the back to add some drag so they didn't go down the mine when running off waves.

About the time they allow cars into motorcycle racing because cars are quicker.

About the time they bring torpedo-shaped streamlined recumbent bicycles into the Tour de France.

About the time they bring flippers into the Olympic Games swimming events because they make swimming faster.

About the time they allow fully-crewed boats into shorthanded races because they are faster.

When they allow radar-directed machine guns into skeet shooting.

About the time they allow tris to race in the C Class catamaran events.

About the time they allow death metal bands into folk music festivals.

When the cat regattas allow kitesurfers and windsurfers and skiffs.

Why is it that people complain when mono people run races just for monos, which is basically what people do for just about every other type of sports equipment? Why do people say that mono races should be opened up to multis when multis ban monos, kites, boards etc from multi races?

Simple. It's because they have a preference for multis, and think that if the race is opened up to multis they will get to prove that their preference is superior, therefore they are smarter than people who like monos. So there, nya nya nya.

I hope Wild Oats' engine breaks down just outside Sydney Heads. That way we'll get an idea of how well she sails.

Go multis! Pass all those old, slow, ancient monos ....

    :D

Wait! Outriggers are every bit as old .... and SOF is even older than those poor, slow, brand new, EXPENSIVE monos .....

Multis should go easy on those poor guys who think they are still in the game ....

    ;)

We have invited the Hastings Yacht Club monohull sailing fleet to compete in our 2nd race on Saturday at our SOMR regatta this year. We are not sure how many will come along but the MYCV (Multihull Yacht Club of Victoria) are keen to build bridges.

The ORCV (Ocean Racing Club of Victoria) have reached out to our club and invited our members to compete in their events if we can muster up some multis to compete in their own division that meet their safety requirements for a given event.

Things can change for the better if people are open to letting them. I think that the Coastal Classic in NZ really shows that mixing a wide range of sailing craft can work and be a great success.

Good on you for building bridges, Corley, but a change is not "for the better" if it increases problems such as obsolescence of current boats, disharmony in the fleet caused by dills (such as some we see here) insulting the boats that others love, confusion in the media, etc etc etc.

If people slag off monohulls like so many multibigots do here then their presence will rob mono races of a lot of their attraction for those of us who love our sport and don't like to see twits preening themselves for being superior because they happen to have different taste in boats. The number of anti-mono posts does seem to indicate that No Eye Deer's point may be right.

I ran a tiny event last weekend for a specific class and it got me thinking about creating a local event for four different sports, all playing together. Then I got back home and saw posts like El Gs and considered how it would be if people from one of those sports starts sneering at the other for being slow or old fashioned, and how much sheen such pomposity would take off the event. Maybe it's not worth trying to bring people together when some of them use it as an opportunity to insult others' tastes in having fun?

    Sounds great Corley,
the starts need to be well organised & separate, multis often don't mix too good with monos at close quarters..... or even each other at times;)
Agreed with CT249s sentiments also, way too much S*** bagging esp' from some multi sailors at times. Great racing is often close, some of my best days were on relatively slow boats gunnel to gunnel with the competition, had some fun on some fast boats too.

You know I'm pleased to say I don't see too many multi bigots or mono bigots these days. I'm pleasantly surprised to say at a club level at least I mostly meet sailors passionate about the activity of sailing and their own part in it. I'm sure there are still the odd ones propping up club bars and bemoaning the new acceptance of various sailing craft whilst slagging them off incessantly but thankfully they do appear to be receding into history.

I think your right, there is less. With so many commercial multihulls & great cruising/charter cats available & well represented at boat shows & marine press the choices seem to be better accepted.
I cringe though when I hear some rubbish spouted though, esp' from the multi side, has always been very unhelpful & poor salesmanship/marketing.
