Four years after the Belgian ship Pompei was seized and held to ransom Belgian police has lured the man behind the piracy to Brussels and arrested on arrival.

Poor guy. Politicians regularly go on speaking tours to generate a bit of cash and they dont get arrested.

That poor pirate needs to get a good new york lawyer

Nice place for a pirate to hang out !!

Hopefully during the upcoming trial citizens of concerned countries will learn that these pirates came alive as a response to illegal fishing by European factory style ships in thier coastal waters.

Perhaps new rules will be enforced protecting the offshore resources of contries with corrupt, ineffective governments, from predatory industrial fishing

There's a lot of truth in what you're saying. The total breakdown of government and law enforcement allowed foreign ships to plunder the local fisheries, giving the pirate organizers a steady supply of recruits who could no longer make an honest living fishing. And of course, once it started the lure of easy money kicked in...

Something we don't hear much about is the number of fatalities among the pirates who set out in small boats, and don't make it home because they're wiped out by weather or simply become disoriented at sea with no navigational aids.

But don't get me wrong: regardless of how understandable the piracy is, it isn't acceptable. I have a lot of sympathy for rabid dogs, too; they didn't choose to become infected. But they need to be put down anyway.

I remember when this piracy issue first started. The victims were foreign tuna fishing factory ships illegally harvesting on the east african continental shelf . The local small craft tuna fisherman could no longer harvest fish because the inshore schools were depleted .

The British diplomat concerned with African affairs stated that to address the problem fast patrol craft and training be supplied to somalian coastal towns so that they could patrol thier own waters and take charge of the situation.

Because the region is islamic this proposal got nowhere

The logic tells me that the patrol craft were intended for use against the intruding foreign tuna fishing factories... Right? ;)

Yes. The patrol craft, training and financial assistance were intended to empower responsible somalian citizens. Give then a job, a career, free dental insurance, pension, pride ,all the normal stuff.

Instead lawless somalians took matters into thier own hands, created private armies, raided illegal fishing ships then returned home to distribute the spoils and provide local employment.

    they became local heroes

    Very bad foreign policy move..

North African piracy has been ongoing for over 1200 years. It precedes the Byzantine, British and American navies. Not saying the tuna fleets are innocent but they did not cause it.

The US began its history as pirate nation. Celebrated today with by the tea party.
Nothing new with piracy and attacking foreigners who harvest your resources.

The people in somalia live in absolute poverty...once they lost thier fishing grounds they had nothing

Good point, the Somalis need a government to protect the the country's interests and the citizens and their rights and to prevent they commit crimes or to bring them to justice if they do.

If in the meantime any Somali pirates can get their hands on new Belgian hostages they most likely will be sold to the clan of this chief to serve as exchange material for his release. If they can get multiple then those are at risk to be killed one by one to invigorate the arguments. I'm sure the hunt is open already. . .

Well, no cheers after these thoughts . . :(

Yes indeed. Pirates are criminal. But if you dont understand how they came to power, if you cant understand history..you will never solve the problem

Piracy is blooming on the west coast of africa. Same story. Poor people having thier resources stolen by corrupt governments in cooperation with corrupt energy hungry foreign companies.

Boycott the big european energy companies who engage in this plunder.
