as a few of you know from my other thread fairey hunt 18 i have been playing around with the hull mould and made a tunnel cat.

i've got a quite a bit of work to do yet as its only a bare hull with a few ribs in place to stiffen it up.

i have turned the hull upside down so i can work on getting the hull nicely polished up.

i have raised the transom , sides up by 6" and bow up by 8".

gunnels to go on top yet which will bring the height up a bit more.

Nice looking project. What are you powering her with?

Looks like you could hang a foil between those hulls for a bit more lift.

    cheers mate.

not sure on the engines yet but will be outboards.

id like to think that a pair 50-60hp outboards would do the job.

i have thought about fitting a foil but i don't think the boat will need one as my other boat which is basically the same hull has a lot of lift any way.

if it needs a foil i can always add that on at a later date.

Looks familiar ! That was a split mould for your 18 foot mono wasn't it, I thought you have done well to create another mould from scratch......You are a very industrious chap.

    correct mate.

the mould for my other boat is a 3 piece mould so i thought id have a play and see what i can make from it.

ended up making a melamine tunnel mould and melamine transom and then bolted the 2 hull mould sections to it and then set about gelling it out and laying it up and what you see is what i have ended up with.

once out the mould i then had to raise the sides up etc.

i have just started prepping the hull up for duratec paints as there are a few repairs to do from where i raised the sides up.

can't wait to start making the moulds now but thats a few weeks away yet.

the hull has now been flattened off and any repairs done and now coated in duratec surface primer ready for wet flatting down and polishing up.

ive now got all the materials to make the mould of the hull.

    i have bought

    50kg tooling gelcaot
    250kg of resin
    1 roll 1.5oz mat
    2 rolls 2oz mat
    2 rolls combi mat 600/300

also had some nice little nylon locators made up to fix to the temporary flanges so the mould can be located in exactly the same position every time its bolted together.

can't wait to get started now.

juts got the worse job ever to do now though. wet flat the hull down ready for polishing.

Have you tried that hull shape out to see if it works, or what might be improved?

the hull this is based on worked really well.

i looked long and hard at what i could do with the hull and came up with how it is now.

there is a company local to me that make a similar hull but slightly smaller and that works well with twin 30hp engines.

i know i may be taking a risk making the mould but i know it will work and have had a few boat builders look at it and they all love the shape and reckon i will be ok.

at the end of the day if it don't work that well then i've got myself a boat which i built to how i want it.

im not fussed if i sell 100 or 1 or 2 as this really is just about me making a boat how i see it in my head for myself.

hull has now been flattened off and polished up and i have made a start on fitting the flanges to one side ready for the moulding to start.

got a couple more coats of mould release wax to put on and then a coat of pva release agent and then the fun work can start.

So there is no provision for a centrally mounted single outboard then ? I say that because there is no fairing there to shield the leg of an outboard. That could be added later of course, but it might be better to have something there from scratch, if you decide to experiment with a single engine.

at the moment i will be leaving it as it is as i will be testing with twin outboards but i can easily add a tapered section in to the tunnel for a single outboard.

if i do get people after single outboard versions then it will be pretty easy to glass the tapered section in place once the hull is built.

personally i don't want to run single outboard as i want to fit a door in the transom right where a single outboard would be positioned.

    Cool project !

The weight of two times 50hp might be a bit stern heavy

the weight of 2 60hp four strokes im going to use are only 106kg each.

my previous which this cat is based on had an engine which weighed around 140kg on the back and i stood on the outboard pod as well when i took the boat out making the total weight closer to 240kg and the boat only went down probably less than 1/4" lower in the water so i reckon the weight of 2 engines won't be a problem plus with a decent sized wheelhouse up front that will help balance the boat.

not posted for a while due to being busy.

have got the mould up and underway.

it has now got 3 good layers of csm all over and will now have 2 layers of combi woven put on for strength and then a layer or 2 of csm on top of that in grey pigmented resin and then i can start glassing in all the ribs/stiffeners so the mould keeps its shape.

i had some problems with the tooling gelcoat as it would not stay on the plug when applied so i got in contact with the makers and they came out and had a look at it and decided it was not right so they gave me my money back.

only colour i could get at short notice was a lightish grey gelocoat but not too light.

im hoping to have the mould built up to thickness over the next couple weeks.

would like it done sooner but im doing this on my own and it takes time as i work part time as well.
