The Northern Sea Route (Northeast Passage) opens for international merchant shipping . . . .

The Guardian: China's voyage of discovery to cross the less frozen north

The Independent: The shipping forecast - it’ll be colder but much, much quicker: New Arctic shipping route saves up to two weeks’ travel between Asia and Europe

-- Dutch link -- Port of Rotterdam: Arrival Yong Sheng - Wednesday, September 11, 2013 - 14:00 hrs.

Northern Sea Route - vs - Suez Route

No electronics, she carried crane parts for a new part of the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam.

Or the Dutch themselves . . .

I guess that's why not so rust-streaked ships with precious cargo, like a lot of cars or electronics, aren't taking the northern route yet . . .

Could be a Chinese " territorial claim " to get them onto the negotiating table when Nothern Route oil and tranport link rules are discussed. Like Antartica.

I cant believe that Ice Class ships, staffed by Ice class crew , with ice pilots on board , making one way trips in season is economical

25% less fuel = 25% less carbon from the largest polluter in the world. Not too bad.

25% less fuel cost = a LOT of $'s. Not bad.

No PIRATES. Not good, the poor pirates will starve without the millions they get in bounty.

No Suez Canal. Less cost, much less risk.

    Did we mention NO pirates?

    Insurance costs must plummet.

    Not necessarily true. There's Greenpeace...

Apart from the question whether Greenpeace is a piracy organization, I don't think that pirates* will be given any chance on the northern route...

The New York Times: Russia Preparing Patrols of Arctic Shipping Lanes
    * Pirates in the sense of the ones who operate in the Strait of Malacca and the Gulf of Aden -extending to the whole northwestern Indian Ocean- for the Suez route, and the Niger Delta and Gulf of Guinea -extending to the east side of the Atlantic- for the southern route via Cape of Good Hope.

Look closer at the map. Route shows port of departure in South Korea, not China.

Oil and minerals are the prize. Political insecurity in the oil rich nations and the
sea routes make ice passage attractive for an energy importer like china and arctic raw material exporters

When saudi Arabia and the middle east finally melts down the arctic will be king

I think you underestimate the dangers of Arctic Ice and the extra costs it brings, here's a definition of ‘‘ice free’’ in the Arctic . . .
Port of Antwerp: (PDF) COSCO’s M.V. Yong Sheng Completed Her Maiden Voyage through the Northeast Passage of the Arctic Waters
About insurance of this Yong Sheng trip, she is owned by COSCO (China Ocean Shipping Company) which is owned by the Chinese government.

I think they don't insure at all and bear the risk themselves, and I'll guess it will be hard to get any money out of them in the event of an accident.

Yes, that makes the shown northern route longer for departure from Dalian in northeastern China, they had to go south first to round North and South Korea before going north.

    Cheers,
    Angel

P.S. - Here the mark points at Dalian.
