Actually, I think I may have a reason why sugar might work. When I compost my vegetable scraps the compost pile starts to stink. If I intermix grass or leaves or weeds with the vegetable scraps there is virtually no smell.

Similarly, when I've tried pooping into sawdust in a bucket, and then covering the deposit with sawdust, there is virtually no smell, even when I didn't divert the urine. (Really!)

From my reading I understand that what smells in the decay of vegetables and poop (and urine) is an excess of nitrogen compared to carbon. The excess nitrogen gets converted to ammonia, which stinks. By adding carbon to the mix (such as leaves, weeds, grass, sugar??), the break-down microbes produce inoffensive byproducts (H2O & CO2), not smelly byproducts. So maybe the sugar provides the needed carbon when added to the urine.

Perhaps you can try another experiment without your wife's explicit blessing?

Not at home. Not right now. I'm treading on thin ice here.
There is a saying in Mexico, 'Happy wife, happy life."
    The obverse is obvious. :)

I tried sugar, too. It helped, but not enough.

Really, the best approach is to empty and rinse the jug every day, and hit the urine trap with a spritz of something after each use.

I don't always empty mine every day, so the pet stain and odor remover works the best for me.

I thought you used multiple jugs. Sealing, storing, until eventually disposing.

Never having used a compost toilet, only reading about them, even boring miniscule information would be helpful. :)

Some folks use a spray bottle with some scented head treatment diluted with water sprayed in the urine area after each use, which they claim helps keep the urine smell at bay. Maybe the head treatment stuff is similar to the pet stain stuff.

Remember, my motor home is basically permanently parked. So I don't need to use more than one back-up jug. But I intend to build in lidded storage space for three or four extras in my boat, just in case. Probably for two on one side of the C-Head, and one on the other, along WITH a space for a small, flip-top waste can for paper.

One thing I like about the stuff I use is that it doesn't have a heavy fragrance of its own, to call attention to itself. It just disappears the other odors.

I'm a dog person, but I bought an automatic catbox for a daughter some years back. I will never forget how fast the cat left when the rake came out to comb the kitty litter.
Try to imagine what was going through it's mind. "O my God! What came OUT of me?"

i'm thinking something similar in a large compost bin.

    why?
cause I want to see guests scurry like that cat! :D

The range of interesting options appears limitless:

Then you would have to declare war or create an international incident every time you had to go to the bathroom.
