Good primers for Aluminum skinned boats ?

    I can only remember Zinc Chromate. If available ?

    What brands make both the primer & color ?

    Careful....Zinc Chromate will kill you and is banned in many regions..

    " If a patch of zinc chromate is discovered, all personnel should leave the immediate area and close the compartment down. Warn all personnel in the immediate vicinity and inform the OOD of the potential contamination area."





    Go to the International Paint website and follow thier aluminum painting advice.

    Sandblasting is the correct surface prep.

    I'll second the "Aluthane" offering from Progressive (Paul Oman above), as I've tested this stuff and it's an impressive, economical choice.

    This said, there are other options as well, depending on budget, durability requirements, application preference, etc.

    Choose what top coat your want to use and then follow that manufacturers instructions for painting aluminum. Mixing and matching primers / fillers / top coats may work fine, especially if you have loads of experience, but these manufacturers will point fingers at each other should something go wrong. If you stick with one manufacturers "system" you don't have to worry about compatibility and if something goes wrong you will have recourse.

    Wot ? Now they tell us ! I am still alive purely by luck then. :D And I am sure there would be plenty of roofs painted or primed with it that catch/caught drinking water. I will have to get someone to hold my hand for ten minutes while I get over this alarming news ! :p

    If you use reasonable precautions, you'll not have issues, unless you make a 30 year career out of applying this stuff.
