Looking for information wing mast STEP

Does the skeg extend far aft (and what's the thought behind this?) or is that some kind of rendering error?

 

On a smaller boat would a car bal and socket work?

 

i looks like, that this is only the rudder shown in the lifted position...

I picked up on this late and think I will employ on my small outrigger, using smallest ball and custom socket in mast (T-6 tube) base...a stubby, stayed, to carry 26 foot yard, 16 foot boom with 220 sq2.

Seems simple enough, I can find the right ball.

I want simple. Drop in on ball, let lean against deck, tie down stays, rig and run...my step will be down below deck at keel line in hull. Just seems easier way to step alone...should do same job as above deck...

Stays are suggestion from good folks here, and wise. Much safer and fills my want for hand holds as well.

 

Mast Step -ball and Socket Style

Say, I wanted to thank y'all for helping me...I ran with the ball-socket idea for my outrigger mast step...

No real good trailer hitch balls for job, but one can acquire a plain SS solid ball on line and set on support (Say 10 $coots shipped USA) and make a socket mold...pin it and voila, low cost.

Will post pics when I begin to craft it after ball arrives...very kewl...never occurred to me...until you guys helped...
