it would probably be a Harry Chapin tune. :)

I think your your right with the idea that better eating/farming habits
could result in more, as well as healthier people, and all that could/would entail. we are still evolving on a global scale and I think that's a good thing., but I also think we have a long way to go. I think you touch on this in many ways, and I agree. I would like to think that one day, there will be enough for everybody.

There must be a beginning of any great matter, but the continuing unto the end until it be thoroughly finished yields the true glory.

We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form. ~William Ralph Inge, Outspoken Essays, 1922

"Love means never having to say you're sorry"

( from a 1970 movie "Love Story", starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw)

Mind-numbing in its inanity, it may represent the ultimate expression of counterfeit wisdom. But that's Hollywood.

" It is what it is. " (anonymous)
A staple of those who have no information to add, or information it may not be in the speaker's interests to reveal. It possesses perfect circularity, and great general-purpose utility. If used by someone selling you a boat, it means "don't come back looking for the money you are paying for this pile of junk"

When I was twelve, I went hunting with my father and we shot a bird. He was laying there and something struck me. Why do we call this fun to kill this creature who was as happy as I was when I woke up this morning. ~Marv Levy

I don't know why you killed a bird; maybe it was just for fun. But when I kill one, it's because I'm planning to eat it. And I feel no more shame than I would picking up a dressed chicken at the supermarket; humans have been hunters for millenia.

My dad taught me there's a difference between enjoying a hunt, and hunting just for enjoyment. If I'm not going to eat something, I don't shoot it.

The common thread is that its the effect on the hunter that's important,. I would'nt mind being a neighbor to Myark, who is concerned about being compassionate towards living things, and Troy, who is also concerned about life, but could be a source of the occasional bit of poultry :p

In an earlier stage of our development most human groups held to a tribal ethic. Members of the tribe were protected, but people of other tribes could be robbed or killed as one pleased. Gradually the circle of protection expanded, but as recently we did not include blacks. So African human beings could be captured, shipped to America and sold. In Australia white settlers regarded Aborigines as a pest and hunted them down, much as kangaroos are hunted down today. Just as we have progressed beyond the blatantly racist ethic of the era of slavery and colonialism, so we must now progress beyond the speciesist ethic of the era of factory farming, of the use of animals as mere research tools, of whaling, seal hunting, kangaroo slaughter and the destruction of wilderness. We must take the final step in expanding the circle of ethics. ~Pete Singer
