Locally The Silly Season is August. I defend myself by leaving the anchorage when the silly ones arrive , then re anchor as far away as possible.

A curious behavior by the silly ones is that they always believe that the best anchor ground is next to me....even if I were anchored five miles offshore...the silly ones will appear and anchor on top of me......so close that once anchored they reassess their situation then hang fenders over the side....JUST IN CASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In modern times the silly ones have been empowered to write magazine articles informing their silly readers of various well proven silly techniques. THE SILLY FLOATING BUOY MARKING THEIR SILLY ANCHOR has been universaly adopted.

    DONT DO IT....its silly.

WHAT? You mean there is an anchor on the end (one end) of the anchor chain?

Reminds me of renting a little sailboat years ago. I sailed it (first time) from the dock to the cottage we rented and parked it on the beach while the wife changed her mind about trying it out. It was a Sunfish -

"You're not getting me into that silly little thing . . ."

So off for a sail. Cleared the beach, hopped aboard, and instantly with evil timing the wind gusted and started to blow me sideways. No problemo, just remember what the guy said. I remembered part of it -

"These things are a blast, can't go wrong."

I'm sure there was more. - no, there was more, something to do with a board thingy. I'm standing on it! Whoops; a boat is attacking me - no I'm drifting into it, it's anchored"

The whole problem with sailboats is, they insist on sailing whether you're ready or not. I didn't hit anything but naturally the wind dropped again as soon as I got everything organized. The fastest speed I achieved that day was going sideways. Later I tried horses . . .

And that's the story of how I became a kayaker.

The last horse I rode tried to use my head to knock the bark off the trees and that is why I build boats. :p

Hey- it could happen to anyone, right?

If your trying to join the craze of people who all think they can flip old houses on the cheap, it doesn't always work out so good.

Cutting down a burning tree in the middle of a structural fire take balls though. I was trained to cut by a retired USFS smokejumper. Years later, I happened do be doing some volunteer work outside Flagstaff AZ when a crew of young smokejumpers arrived for qualification training. I hung out with them and trained with them a bit, but I was a bit too old. Crazy job but can pay pretty good if it's a bad year for fires.
