    Good point,
Then again, all that matters to some people, is what they have to fix.
I'll admit, I'm no expert. Every time I've torn apart an engine, I always
have done it with someone else.
I don't do it often enough to trust my skills at re-assembling properly.

I'd classify myself as "user/enthusiast", not "master technician". ;)

I'd also question just how generally expert someone is if they have disassembled and rebuilt a number of diesel engines used in one particular way.

Also a good point; just cause some guy works on diesel engines in trucks for 20 years, does not make him a boat diesel expert.

Cummins rule the road parkland. There is nothing on the market that competes . Even the new cats and euro engines are inferior when it comes to durability and power. We have isx cummins here pulling 170 metric tons 24/7. They give exceptional performance. No experienced operator would say otherwise.

    Thats just you're opinion, man.
To say no other experienced operator would say otherwise, is hog wash.

Good one. We have 200 drivers and i have only heard a couple complain about cummins. We are slowly getting rid of our cat c16's and acerts. Piles of crap those things. The company is trialing a 200 ton gcm scania at the moment but i don't think it will last. Cummins powered kenworths rule heavy transport. . Even in canada a. Btw.. the cummins are getting around 800 meters to a liter and the cats battle to get 600. And the old k19 cummins were fantastic engines . I have had them in trucks and drill rigs.

If they were as great as you make them out, there wouldn't be another engine company in existence.

Onan generators used Cummins. When a yacht comes in for a generator change, upgrade...the Onan is lifted out..the generator striped off and sent to scap metal dealer and the Cummins diesel is saved. Onan dealers would be a good place to look for a cheap secondhand marine diesel

    Good idea.
And from my experience, hours on a genset arent nearly as bad as on a prime mover.

Dont know how you would convert a generator to a propulsion engine.. Obviously the injector pump, governor.

Should be doable on a budget...all the marine cooling parts are in place.

Logical fallacy, pretty much a straw man.
    Google it.

BTW to straw man you...how many motorhomes have the 360? None I've heard of.
How many yachts offered it as standard equipment. None I've heard of and have never seen one in a boat.
How many ended up in production pickups? None.
    Therefore:
BTW your whole rant sounds like that of a "fan boy".
I suggest you take your rumoured "300 psi" of turbo boost, mis-representations, and mis-comparisons somewhere where someone might care,as it has zero to do with cruising about in boats...

on alibaba there are lots of cummins marine and industrial engines cheap from china. I don't know if they are copys or what but if the advertising is true they may be a good option.

How many motor homes end up with ford v10's and 6.0 diesel's?
    (probably 60- 80%)
Does that make those engines the best?
That would be a rough argument.
But yes, absolutely nothing to do with boats, I agree.
The dt360 doesn't even have a marine following that I'm aware of.
I understand that cummins is a GIANT company, with huge numbers of sales, but that doesn't simply mean the engines are the best, uncontested.

No, I'm not a fanboy, I don't take personal offense if one engine out performs an engine that I "like", but out of fairness, when we're talking about a 5.9 cummins vs a 360 dt engine, good luck finding someone knowledgable who will tell you the cummins is tougher, it simply isn't.

    I also wanted to add,
as I think maybe my last satement sounded quite rash,

that just cause I think a dt360 engine is "stronger", I am not insinuating, that anyone with a cummins should tear it out, and find a dt360 and swap them.
I'm not saying the 5.9 cummins is junk, we all know it's a solid engine. Maybe (according to my opinion) it could be a more stout engine, but the 5.9 cummins is far more popular, and since it has a marine version as well, is probably more practical as well, thus it could easily be "better".

I didn't intend to start a giant brand war/ engine fight...
Out of fairness, every brand has good products, and bad products.
Can we call that a fair end to any brand fighting?

THAT !!! is the delight , the reason a really strong diesel engine can be has at the wreckers for almost nothing .Well $2000, $3000 Us for a low mile takeout.

On both coasts the International DT 360 or 466 is sometimes fitted in lobster boats , but that is happily the only demand.

As its not a "factory " marinization the boat builders do not install them on new builds.

Their lack of knowledge is our gain!!!
