    Duct tape a palm sander to it and make short work of the job.

    I actually thought about fastening it to the in line auto sander and having a go at it. I still do have an idea in mind when i get to sanding the FRP keel shell that will be taken off the keel male mold I am working on here. Unlike the standard process of building a plug and creating a female mold from which i pull off a FRP keel shell I am going to skip a stage and sand smooth the exterior surface of what would normally be the female mold as the finished product. The result will be less accurate foil wise but if i'm careful in the consistency of my layup thickness I should get it close enough. Good enough for the girls(vessels) I sail with. :D

    I have a 1/2" sheet sander that I've modified for use with a long board. It has an orbital/in line switch and I use it the in line setting, which cuts faster and doesn't hide the cross hatch pattern I'm looking for.

    Since your qualifications, production levels and customers far out number my past i've no doubt there are a few tricks in speeding up the fairing to be taught here. :). Recalling the 4 legged boys having accepted me, I feel confident I can walk up and ring your door bell --Be in touch neighbour

    Yeah, I'm one shy now, we had to put down Ryley, but I still have 4 others as back up. The pit is full grown now and she likes fresh meat, so stop on by any time.

    Forming The Leading Edge In Foam

    The foam I used on this foil was a 4' X 8' sheet of polyisocyanurate 2" thick Trade name in Canada IKO Therm. Commonly used in house construction exterior to the roof sheeting when installing cathedrial ceilings. It is impervious to resins and has a water absorbtion spec of 0% by volume . Cost $32.75, 15% GST tax included. The sheet I purchased was a foam sandwich using kraft paper. It's available with alum. foil or fiberglass coatings and a special product of fiberglass reinforced foam. I ripped it into 8in. planks and used a fence on my bandsaw to remove the kraft paper. My plan here is to glue one plank at at time in place and sand shape it using the long board with the 3/4 ply foil noses as guides. I used plain old PL Premium construction adhesive as my glue with a few lead weights along with long screws and flat washers to hold it in place. I let it dry overnight and left the screws and washers remain in place. Next post sand shaping the first foam plank using our made up long board.

    Sorry for your loss. I suspect the pit(whatis her name?) would find VN a little too chewy for her tastes. ;)

    She's (Lucy) pretty tough, so Viking, might be just the beef jerky she's looking for.

    Ryley was with us for 12 years and survived 17 - 18, which for his breed is 5 years longer than normal. I don't know about the first 1/4 of his life, but his last 3/4's was good.

    I can see the headlines now "" Boat Unfinished, Builder eaten by the Designers Pit Bull" -- when approaching the office to clairfy an engineering question. Next time I come i'll just drop her off a 175lb. quarter of moose meat, hide on. That should keep her busy for 15 min. :p

    fORMING THE KEELS LEADING EDGE

    Ok back to the task at hand -- Prior to sanding with the long board I marked off both the top and bottom 3/4 ply.foil shaped noses with in 2in. coloured sections following the same patterns. Start with the actual nose of each colouring it the same 2in. either side of center, then proceed with 2in. patterns along each side working your way back. Now as i'm sanding it is a simple matter to keep the long board lined up on the same colours of the top and bottom foil shaped noses which will result in proper forming of the foam to match that particular location on the foils as you work your way around the foils shape. While this is tedious and requiring patience it actually works quite well. Especially so if there are two operators, each dedicated to keeping the long board sander located at their respective matching top and bottom colours. In my case i did it slow and solo. In one of the photos you will see a sanding groove formed in the foam plank. To speed up sanding in the next adjacent colour carefully trim off the ridges with a utility knife.

    P.S. In the photos foam plank #1 has been glued in place and form sanded. I am working on foam plank #2 which has been glued(laminated) on top of plank #1.

    I'll bring a few nice thick steaks on my next trip south. My kindergarden layout Kinda threw "you all" off "A". We up north have to add colour ( we even stretch the word out with more letters) where ever possible during winter. Ye have all those colour flashing pretty "birds" flittering around in the forest and on the beach to satisfy your wants. :D
    AHhhh --- The white sands of Daytona will be so enhansed about now, as far as the eye can see. (Old men need (imaginery) love too. :)
