    Hi All,

I am in the process of selling my late uncle's boat and motor, they have sat in his garage for 40 years. I know the engine is a mercruiser but not sure of the engine origin or capacity , a mate says it is a ford winsor but couldn't tell me whether it is a 302 or 351. I will add photos if I can . Thanks in advance

Look up the firing order for 302 and also 351 and compare to yours. They are a little bit different

I'd say from looking at the inlet manifold its a 302 so its Mercruiser 188 ( 888 model)

Thats thrown a spanner in the works. It definitely has the firing order of a 351 according to what I could find on the net.

I miss stated the Cleveland firing order, which is the same as the Windsor. All Fords are numbered the same as far as I know. It's mostly the big blocks with the other order. The number one plug tower on the distributor faces the firewall.

The 1,5,4 order is the old order and Ford recommends you change to the newer 1,3,7 order to relieve stress on the crank. GM did the same thing, but they just number the cylinders differently, though it's still the same sequence. The number one cylinder is always at the front of the engine, (radiator side)

The firing order on this engine is 13726548 , so is Boatbuilder41 wrong ? I did see somewhere else on the net that said the 302 & 351 were different firing orders.Did they become the same at some point because this engine is around 40 yrs old.

    mreoe4sure who me

It looks like a 302, if you look at the picture of the back of the block , the block is the same height as the bell-housing. On a 351w the stroke is longer which required a taller deck height. There is almost a 1 inch the block is above the bell-housing for the longer stroke on a 351w. This is why the intake manifold is wider on a 351 than a 302. The head bolts are also different sizes, 7/16 on a 302, 1/2 in on a 351. Firing orders are the same on 302s and big blocks( Fe. Ft. and 335 series(221,260,289,302 332,352,360,361,390,391,402,410,427,428,429,460) - 15426378
    The 351w ,351c , 351m, 400m 302 - (when it became the 5 liter after 1982 and 302s in marine use have a different firing order--13726548
They used 351 cams in marine 302s and that changed the firing order. WE don't need to talk about Y-blocks or Mels unless someone has them In an old boat Steve

Yep. 302 ho is the same firing order as windsor.but you cant just change firing order around.lift and duration of camshaft is not the same .although cams will directly interchange.later model 5.0 h.o. was used in marine aplications.but i dont think that was so in early years. I dont know it all and im proud to say. I learn every day...... and if im wrong. I just become more educated.

hence why I noticed the inlet difference in the photo.
Package is very old and without being heat exchanged it will be in suspect condition ( there wasnt a heat ex kit for the ford sterndrives)
The heads eat out in the exhaust ports
