I think I would start REAL simple. Take a bike, remove rear tire, attach serving spoons to rim with sheet metal screw. Bend spoons down and play around with the arrangement. Attach cardboard cat hulls to bike.

You could solicit sponsors to donate a spoon. Every team needs a gimmick like that!:)

You could also make the paddles out of flattened beer cans if it's that sort of an event. In that case, sponsors would have to donate a can of beer. I could probably even rationalize this choice after a few beers.

Make a hamster wheel out of PVC pipe and 1 gal milk jugs and 2liter soda bottles, and maybe some plastic sheeting stretched over some of it to reduce drag.

I think you would want the wheel to be as smooth as possible (no 'tread').

Might "peel out" a little at first but would be faster after 1st 30 ft and never look back.

I don't know, Tom - I think he had a workshop move, and, as Rick says, got busy with other things. I know just how it is - very difficult to have just one project on the go at a time, and keep the momentum going. Looked very exciting to me, and fascinating the design developing over the forum, between folk who had never met...
