Huffington Post | Ozone Hole's Winds Are Shifting, May Lead To Decrease In Carbon Dioxide Absorption

Scientists have linked the ozone hole that forms each Antarctic spring high above Earth to changes in the fierce band of westerly winds that swirls around Antarctica. Those winds, closer to the continent's surface, have grown stronger and moved poleward over the past several decades.

And now a new study suggests that the ozone hole has an even broader reach. It finds evidence those shifting winds are speeding circulation patterns in polar waters. That shift is important because it may already be weakening the Southern Ocean's ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and slow the march of manmade climate change…

Waugh and colleagues in the U.S. and Australia found that in the subtropical Southern Hemisphere, water 500 to 1,000 meters deep appear to be growing "younger." That's a sign that north-south circulation in the deep ocean has been speeding up, sending surface water from the ocean surface near the pole to those intermediate depths more quickly, he said. At the same time, the currents closer to Antarctica's shores appear to be pushing more old, deep water up to the ocean surface.

Scientists worry that the increasing upwelling of that water, hundreds of years old and naturally rich in carbon dioxide, is reducing the amount of manmade carbon absorbed by sub-polar waters…

Discovery News | Increase in Deadly Rains Linked to Climate Change

… Recent extreme rains may have been intensified by the rising global average temperature, according to a recent study, which examined data from more than 8,000 weather stations around the planet. The study looked for correlations between atmospheric temperature and extreme rainfall between 1900 to 2009.

“The results are that rainfall extremes are increasing on average globally,” lead author Seth Westra of the University of Adelaide said in a press release. “They show that there is a 7% increase in extreme rainfall intensity for every degree increase in global atmospheric temperature.

The humble sea urchin could hold the key to turning harmful greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into chalk on an industrial scale, British scientists have revealed…

But now scientists have discovered that sea urchins use nickel ions to harness carbon dioxide from the sea to grow their exoskeleton - or shell. It could be a way to capture tonnes of CO2.

Using the nickel nanoparticles suspended in water vats at factories, power stations would capture the CO2 as it is pumped through, converting the gas into the chalk. The nickel catalyst can be recycled and the by-product - the carbonate - is useful and not damaging to the environment…

LONDON – India has to find a new model of development if the twin challenges of job creation and climate change are to be met, says an Oxford University academic, Barbara Harriss-White, of the Oxford Department of International Development…

"The position held by the overwhelming majority in India is that the country – which derives 70 percent of its energy from coal – has the right to pollute based on its relatively small contribution to the historical stock of CO2 in the atmosphere. Understandably, development and poverty reduction are the priorities.

"Yet the country's natural resources are degrading at an alarming rate – a transition to development based on low carbon has to be initiated. And despite the economic growth of recent years, at least 260 million people are malnourished, 45 percent of them children.

"Meanwhile 16 million people are entering the jobs stream each year – most facing the prospect of poor quality jobs, or no jobs at all. All this presents an enormous challenge..."

…Consider the news of the past few weeks:

The New York Times announced that it is disbanding its Environment Desk and wholly eliminating the environment editor and deputy environment editor. The news is particularly important, considering the fact that out of all major national newspapers, the Times had published the most stories about climate change in 2012.

Despite journalist Bill McKibben correctly noting that climate change is “not just the biggest crisis ever (but) the biggest story ever,” Inside Climate News reports that the nation’s five largest-circulation newspapers will only “have about a dozen reporters and a handful of editors among them whose primary responsibility is to cover the environment.”

Citing stats from the Daily Climate, the Huffington Post reports that “as the country experienced its warmest year on record, coverage of climate change on major U.S. television networks and across media outlets dropped in 2012.” In all,

“Worldwide climate coverage decreased by two percent between 2011 and 2012 … marking the fewest number of published stories since 2009.”
The Columbia Journalism Review reports that there are now just 19 weekly science sections left in American newspapers. That’s down from 95 two decades ago.

Fox News host Jon Scott took to the airwaves to insist that climate change is not one of “the really pressing issues of our time.” The declaration came just after Fox’s owner, Rupert Murdoch, began dabbling in climate change denialism and suggesting that climate change is not a crisis. In response, the Free Press’ Tim Karr put it best, saying it is horrifying that a “global warming denier also runs one of the largest news businesses in the world...”

Globe warms and globe cools but it is natural for it to do so. You can only swallow so much garbage before you become known as a landfill. No one wants to be a landfill so don't swallow garbage.

Reuters | Amazon forest more resilient to climate change than feared

The Amazon rainforest is less vulnerable to die off because of global warming than widely believed because the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide also acts as an airborne fertilizer, a study showed on Wednesday.

The boost to growth from CO2, the main gas from burning fossil fuels blamed for causing climate change, was likely to exceed damaging effects of rising temperatures this century such as drought, it said.

"I am no longer so worried about a catastrophic die-back due to CO2-induced climate change," Professor Peter Cox of the University of Exeter in England told Reuters of the study he led in the journal Nature. "In that sense it's good news."

Cox was also the main author of a much-quoted study in 2000 that projected that the Amazon rainforest might dry out from about 2050 and die off because of warming. Others have since suggested fires could transform much the forest into savannah…

..In Ecuador, knowing that exploiting the country’s massive oil reserves will fuel climate change and cause massive environmental destruction in one of the world’s most biologically diverse rainforests, leaders are taking a different approach. The government plans to leave oil fields in Yasuni National Park untouched if other countries help compensate for some of the lost revenue. So far only about $300 million has been raised toward the $3.6 billion over 13 years that the government believes would make up for half the oil’s value, but the idea is gaining momentum.

The Guardian notes the money won’t go to government but will be “held in trust funds and administered by the UN Development Programme working with a board made up of indigenous peoples, local communities, academics and others...”

In 2007, a tyro Australian opposition leader called Kevin Rudd held a summit in which he labelled climate change the "great moral challenge of our generation" and, rather optimistically, added "we should be at a stage in this country where climate change is beyond politics"…

If 2007 was the first climate change election, 2013 will be a poll that pits rampant denialism against grudging action based on political expediency. Far-sighted policies based on moralistic calls to arms have been dumped; this time, Australia is going humdrum on climate. Electricity bills will trump climate ones.

Tony Abbott, leader of the conservative coalition and frontrunner in the polls, has called the 14 September election a "referendum on the carbon tax", the pricing mechanism introduced last year by the minority Labor government. Abbott has gained great mileage from his doom-laden predictions of what the $23-a-tonne carbon price would do to Australia, claiming that it would act as a "wrecking ball" to the economy and darkly forecasting that areas of heavy industry will become "ghost towns"…

Careful, thats a broad statement. People who live and commute in cities are perfect candidates for electric micro cars. Many people dont require a big gas guzzling SUV for trips to Walmart to fill up with boxes of Chinese stuff.

I see plenty of Twizy's hauling *** thru town in perfect silence and parking on a postage stamp . Ten times more practice than a motorbike and clean.

Electric cars run on fossil fuels. The only difference is where you place the CO2(and other noxious gases) exhaust pipe, on the car or on the other end of the charger cord.
