    Realize that.

The 2004 boat had curved dagger boards as most of the 2004 Trans Atlantic multis did as the 2008 design has.

Accordingly I thought it fitting if the 2009 photo which is BP- v, also has similiar dagger boards it, warranted the question was it a foiler as a advancement or progression from 2004 it being now 2013.

Sorry for using so few words which prompted probably your correct reply.

Dagger boards designs don,t appear to be much different in them selves.

Where the 2004 & 2009 design dagger boards foilers in general terms. In other words the hull was clear from the water.

The curved foil designs have proved to be very effective. These projects have a long gestation I can recall reading an article that would be nearly 10 years old with Pascal Bidegorry talking about his next maxi trimaran project which would become BPV.

Basically BPV scaled up ORMA60 concepts to a massive scale. I've read that VPLP are proposing an even larger trimaran with more righting moment (BPV has about 240 tonne metres) I cant find the article so it may have been in Seahorse.

This article is a good reference on BPV:

Yeah! It's a shame that the CYRA is too block headed to allow a multihull class in the Sydney-Hobart.

    Wonder why ?

It's a complex issue, when Sean Langman visited the MYCV and gave a talk about his sailing experiences and his new ORMA he mentioned that they had discussed it with the CYCA management. As most people are aware multihulls are included as a division in most ocean races held by the RORC in the UK (Fastnet, Round Britain and Ireland etc) so there are precedents for the inclusion of multihull craft given the application of appropriate safety standards. There are some obstacles in the CYCA constitution to be overcome apparently but if a fair case can be made with an adequate number of boats it would be considered.

The gist of it is that we would need to find five multis for a division to be considered adequate (fair enough). So we have Team Australia, Vodafone and Peccadillo a 46' Atlantic catamaran owned by the current MYCV Commodore Charles Meridith who have stepped up and said they will equip and race their boats to Hobart as part of the Sydney - Hobart fleet. We would need two more multis to come in and offer to race before we could make a reasonable approach.

It's pretty sad that we cant rustle up a few more boats to make it happen as in the late eighties there were more than enough multis that could have done the race which have since been retired to cruising. I actually think the request for a minimum of five boats to make a division is reasonable and it would be hard to consider running a race of our own with less craft than that.

I think the 5 boat request is reasonable as well and your whole story is very, very encouraging. I can't believe that in the cradle of sailing there aren't 5 multi's willing to go......

I also think the 5 boat request is reasonable. We DO have the boats, but it is the problem of persuading the owners to make the effort.
When I was a member of the MYCV I was also a member of the Sandringham Yacht Club and sailed with them every Wed on a monohull. I bought a half share in a Crowther International 23 and had no trouble in being allowed to race in with their mono fleet. We also won the 1979 "Round the Island" trailersailer race after we were allowed to race, just for the asking. The 45ft Cascade slaughtered the fleet in the 1979 Melb/Devenport race, even though the multies started 5 1/2 hrs after the Monos. It's really a matter of willpower on the part of the bigger multihull owners. I would love the 60ft KAZ to get in there and race, for instance and whats Alex McNaughton doing with Cascade.

Agreed oldsailor, there is no doubt capable multis are there that can do the race but as you say getting the owners interested is a challenge. Most of the current Aussie ocean cruiser/racer multis go North to sail the Darwin to Ambon race or go to Phuket and Langkawi race weeks rather than coming South. It's a pity as Tassie and the Bass Strait Islands are a very underrated place to go cruising after the race for multis. Cascade is on the hard at Allcraft Marine at the moment I think Alex is still working on his refit. It's a shame I didn't have a video camera with me at the meeting where we were discussing cruising the North and East Coast and Bass Strait as Alex's talk was excellent.

Not sure if Spindrift would take much of an interest in the Sydney to Hobart as it's really just a short jaunt on BPV but I guess you never know. We had Geronimo the maxi trimaran of Olivier de Kersauson set a new round Australia record of 17d 12h 57m 5s so I guess it's not impossible maybe they would aim to do both the Sydney to Hobart and Around Australia while in the area.

Vodafone NZ have stated in the past that they would like to do the Sydney to Hobart Race.

Forgot to mention the last winner Brisbane to Gladstone Race Wild Thing should be interested if vodafone NZ enters.

You could be hearing from Spindrift Racing.

    Heres the designers sugestion,

    http://schionningdesigns.freeforums.org/schionning-designs-racing-t6.html

So Syney hobart could also be a posibility. It would fall into the cruiser catagory as on 2nd thoughts vodafone and wild thing would not. However as an unofficial entry leave 30 mins after the start , for the racers and extreme racers designs, would be on as it has been done before.

OR push for 2 divisions -- Multihull - - Racing Div and Cruising Div.

Spindrift Racing have stripped the old colour scheme off Banque Populaire V in preparation for a full facelift and refit of the boats equipment.

Here is the rough bing translate of the Spindrift Racing update

Here it is, the Maxi Spindrift 2 left her blue dress. It will go into its hangar this afternoon for out... as in July! The team will now proceed to the complete check-up of the machine and in secret at his total makeover! A few more weeks to wait to discover the new design of the boat

It was reported that the CYRA would consider a multihull division in the S H if a minimum of five boats can be guaranteed. They don't all have to be the same models, but five Orma 60's or Mod 70's would be a big ask.

I clarified the issue with Sean recently. He mentioned that I must have misunderstood and the five boat request was for multihulls to join sops http://www.cyca.com.au/racing/summer-program/ which is the CYCA's offshore race series which is conducted during the year. I cant personally see that becoming a reality as ocean racing multihulls are spread far and wide in Australia and most of the Pittwater boats are more geared towards round the buoys racing.

Team TVS and TA are considering running a rebel event for Cat1 safety regulation rated multihulls to race to Hobart and he mentioned that other Cat1 rated multihulls might be invited along for the race. It didn't sound like it was set in stone but it was encouraging ;).

My thoughts on hearing of it is that there are not many Cat1 multihulls in Australia the Three Peaks Race is about Cat2 iirc. The encouraging news to me is that if the event does happen it may give justification for owners of privately owned racing multihulls to have a reason to equip their boats to Cat1 standards.

" it may give justification for owners of privately owned racing multihulls to have a reason to equip their boats to Cat1 standards."

That would really give the whole multihull scene a credibility boost. :D.
