Spindrift Racing buy Maxi Trimaran Banque Populaire V

Spindrift Racing have purchased Banque Populaire V and have signalled their intention of pursuing a new record breaking program.

I wonder what you would have to fork out to purchase BP5, any guesses?

 

I reckon it would be pocket money for Dona Bertarelli, I seem to recall the boat cost something like 11 million Euros to build maybe half of that to buy it now? I'm looking forward to the blue (black beast in Spindrift colors?) tearing around again though. I wonder whether one of their goals is cracking that magic 1000nm record? There is no doubt the boat can do it given the right conditions.

 

40 + knots for 24 hours straight, now that would be one hell of a ride !

Ahh to be able to afford to buy and maintain a maxi like BP5, now thats a dream worth having.

Brisbane to Gladstone in under 10hrs sound possible ? Cmon Mrs Bertarelli, Id be happy to crew

Will Pascal Bidegorry be skipper once again? It would be great to see him return to race the beast after being given the rough end of the pineapple by Banque Populaire. He works for Spindrift Racing and would be a logical choice. It would be great if he could have another go at bettering the Jules Verne record, I guess we will see.

Is it a foiler.

 

VPLP didn't begin designing BP-V until 2006 and launched in 2008. You may be confusing other BP tris with this one.

 

Not strictly a foiler it does use foil assist in the form of curved foils in the floats.

 

Might not the new owner and her husband skipper the boat some of the time?

Are you sure? The Mod 70 ama board lifts 70% of the boat, I imagine the BP5 board does similarly. So if it lifts 70% of the boats weight it must "mostly" be a foiler? I guess it's still foil assist because it relies on buoyancy for pitch control?

 

I was just using the normal terminology for this system Doug which is generally accepted to be "foil assist" due to pitch control being carried out by buoyancy. Some of the last ORMA60's played around with a T-foil on their transoms so I guess you could term them full foilers? Geant for example had a t-foil at one stage it must have been removed before the boat was sold or not a success though as it's not on Geant/Vodafone.

They are certainly an important part of the MOD70 though as when one was damaged on the Oman Sail MOD70 the boat sailed very poorly (constantly nosediving etc) until they worked out they could take the foil from the other float and refit it backwards in the other case.

I found this little entry on Daily Sail from the following article. It appears that Michel Desjoyeaux's T foil went to Gitana. Gotta love having a bucket mounting as a "luxury".

Over the winter Geant has been under the knife as she of all the ORMA 60s has suffered from the new limits introduced this year on lifting foils (ORMA have decided, like many of the dinghy classes, that they don't want their boats to become fully airborne). Desjoyeaux says he had a choice between making his International 14-style rudder T-foils smaller or the lifting foils on Geant's floats. In the end he chose the former option and sold his 'big T-foil' to Gitana X. As a luxury mod prior to the Transat, Desjoyeaux says Geant now has a proper mounting for his 'bucket' down below, so that it stays in one place rather than getting thrown around.
