Good thread. Have never seen an HDPE boat before.
How much will the raw HDPE cost for this boat?

its called a jet boat because of the propulsion, it is via a jet unit from a Polaris jet ski

it would be handy to have people i could share ideas with but so far not a lot of these style jet boats have been made so that isnt really an option. I'm building it at home in my spare time, a lot of time is taken up with a plain of attack, i.e what can go wrong, if this happens then how can i fix it etc but slowly getting somewhere i guess, its looking good and hope to have it on the river in the next few months

    HDPE boats

There are a bunch of plastic boats out there.

Here is one made from HDLXPE:
    http://www.widmerboat.com/newspressreleases.html

Stick of TNT 6" away does nothing.
It has internal ribs to stiffen it up.

Pioner boats from Norway (since 1958):

The Multi model with front ramp is incredible!
Is there a US dealer anywhere?

    How they are made (rotomolded):

TSE brand UHMW sheets. They sell 1/8" skived and 1/4" thickness standard:
    TSE-OK - Gatorback - http://bit.ly/12oDTnh

Used on the bottom of airboats as skidplates. They slip over rocks.
Also used as dump truck liners.
The factory did tell me that they have never tested heat welding their material. They also said that plain UHMW PE plastic filler rods would be compatible.
Very responsive guys. Will sell direct to you but extra pallet charge for less than 10 sheets.

Now, to the original poster. What heat gun were you using in your video?
It has an LCD panel on the side.

We all need to know specific brands of tools so the poly boat revolution can continue uninterrupted ;)

Could you subsitute HDPE for plywood over solid wood frames install with screws and adhesives and heatweld the seams together? The stuff seems indestructable,

    KK:

    Thanks for the links.

Yes, this HDPE is a great material for boats. Interesting to see it is being used in ever larger boats.

Wonder how it hold up to UV, if continuously left in the sun?

If the hull is flexing under operation, does that mean it is less efficient? Seems like stiffer, high pressure inflatable kayaks/rafts take less energy to paddle than standard low pressure ones?

Sounds like something I'd do. Or will be doing ;)

Wood is cheaper. But then ya gotta cover it with something.

I think your idea might be just fine. UHMW strip built boat even.
    Many possibilities.

I'm going to be working on a DIY rotomolding machine. I want to make big "dock floats" using one. Its for a custom raft/boat design. The nose and tail *were* going to be done with foam/fiberglass skin...though I'm not so sure anymore. 1/8" heat welded/bent UHMW PE over wooden CNC cut frame sounds great. Fill the cavities with pour foam...I think it will bond to the PE?

No problem! Took me a few days to research this subject.

The plastic has anti UV additives built in. Think big black dock floats/kayaks.
How long does a big black dock float last with continual salt water immersion?

I think they said that PE is a very saltwater resistant material. One of the best.

I mean...rotomolded boats were "invented" in 1958. Norweigans. Nuff said.
Nice insulated ride for cold waters.

Another thing to consider. I'm in one of the highest UV areas of the US. Big green PE rotomolded city garbage cans and 55 gal PE barrels hold up fine. Not many other plastics do out here.

ABS in particular sucks. It does not hold up to saltwater or so I hear.

So PE is the material. Heavy....but really destruction proof.
I don't mind those qualities in a boat. Not into speed myself.
