Hi all, this is my first post in an online forum so please forgive me if i break any break any social norms :)

I have just put a deposit down on a 2007 four winns vista 258, the boat of my dreams (save for a sunseeker predator, maybe in few years :)). I went for the 258 as it seems to be the absolutely largest boat you can get on a trailer and pull with a car legally in NSW.

I am now looking at a suitable tow car. I've previously had and loved a 2003 Range Rover Vogue V8, and might just be able to stretch to the first of the supercharged ones. This was my obvious choice for a long time due to the fact it seems to be the most complete car around with it's offroad credentials (more important to me than most RR owners - I do enjoy hitting the tracks and going camping every so often). Somebody put the idea of a Cayenne Turbo in my head - much more focussed on on-road perfromance. I'm keen to hear of any experiences anybody has had towing heavy (>3,000kgs) with either that might help my decision.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Best
    Chris

    Welcome aboard Freddy... :)
1st question is are you looking only for a tow vehicle, or a 'car' that can be used daily...?
We have a (now 10+ year old) Holden Suburban which we use for towing a 3500kg boat/trailer. We also have a LR Discovery and I have towed with the RR as well. The Suburban (6.5L diesel) is the hands down winner as a tow vehicle, but by far the lesser 'car'.
One of the big Ford F-series would be a good bet. I don't think they make them anymore though if you are looking for a new vehicle.
I would expect the RR to be a better tow vehicle than the Cayene - but that's just a gut feeling... the Cayene being more of a sports 'car'.
I would also opt for diesel over petrol too - generally more torque etc. The diesel Suburban for instance is a vastly better tow vehicle than the 5.7L petrol variant. We have one of those too....
IMHO when you are towing a big boat, you want as big and heavy a tow vehicle as you can get.

In terms of biggest towable boat... I could've provided you with a bigger one that's still under the 3500kg limit... though you would need to display an oversize sign whilst towing it....take a look at "Graphite" on my website :)

    Welcome Freddy to the interwebs:

I used to be a car dealership manager, and an auto broker and know wayyyy too much about RR.
Unless you really love them,I don't recommend you buy a used supercharged- or any of them for that matter.

Is there nothing else in AUS that can tow it?

    Landcruiser V8 diesel?

    Welcome Freddy!

I use a Sorento 2.5 CRDI automatic to pull my boat out. Total tow weight is approx 4000 kg.
In 4WD low gear the car moves as if the 4 tons aren't there.

2nd the landcruiser. Suburban is rubbish as are landrover and rangerover. F trucks are good but to big for everyday use.

The landcruiser v8 diesel is good but not very economical.

Locally , volkswagen products ,powered by a 2 liter diesel and Volkswagens double clutch auto transmission , are the most popular tow vehicle for small trailer motorboats and campers.... 1400 kg loads.

In the US market, the last good F-Series diesel engine was the 7.3 liter. The later ones are problematic with the emissions equipment, like cooled EGR. The later transmissions and engines of that run are the best, like the 1999-2002 years with more power and the 4R100 transmission. I have a 1996 with a bit less power and less desirable transmission. It doesn't notice 2000kg behind it on the highway. Fuel economy towing the boat is better then the petrol variant empty. 4WD is a must, as the engine is very heavy, and you will find boat ramps a challenge with 2WD.

Fishy is right about the 7.3/4R100.
I never understood why they just didn't put on better injection, maybe a 3 or 4 valve head and call it a day.
Or just bigger valves and pump the boost a little.

However, the topic of Range Rovers got me seeing red and forgot to mention the Cayenne's have issues though they are better than RRs-which is not that great of an accomplishment.
Be prepared for stratospheric parts and maintenance prices, and opportunities to use them...

    Bollocks!:p
There's absolutely no doubt that the Suburban is a crude beast... but as a tow vehicle it is so far ahead of the cruiser that it isn't even worth debating. I've towed rigs up to just over 4000kg with our diesel Suburban from Tassie to QLD and back about 1/2 a dozen times. It rolls along effortlessly at 110km/h and yields around 18 mpg in the process. It is rock solid on the road, comfortable and large enough to fit all of the bits and pieces that any sensible operator would take with them on such a journey.
I've towed the same rig(s) with a cruiser a couple of times and wouldn't be happy going much further than the carpark.
If you are looking for a luxury vehicle as well as something that can tow, then I agree... the Suburban probably isn't your vehicle... but then neither is the cruiser. Our Disco is a '97 2.5l tdi and is still more comfortable to travel in than every Toyota 4WD that I've ever travelled in. We bought it (new) because at the time it was the only vehicle that could legally tow the 4000kg load that we have. I wouldn't choose to use it to go much further than the carpark with such a heavy load either, though it is still rated to tow more than just about any of the newer 4WD's. Hence the move to the Holden...

If your looking for a fashion statement why not go Unimog ?

Arnold Schwarzenegger has one. Leather Seats, Ipod and everything...good for twenty ton bollard pull so no tough guys are going to be kicking sand in your face at the launch ramp.

    Chicks love big rigs.

If thats all you have to contribute frosty go back to your own thread. Will is the suburban worth talking about. They are not available new and not that easy to get 2nd hand. Landrover are useless for towing and are piles of crap like most english vehicles.

Thats just and only just your opinion . Are you in the motor trade?

Whitpointer said,----- Landrover are useless for towing and are piles of crap like most english vehicles.

You mean the Land rover made for towing and the Army.-- All English is crap!!!!!! Is this indicative of the rest of you vehicle knowledge.

Any towing similarities of vehicle in any way has to be done in a scientific way not just "oh I had one of those and it was crap and I like these .
