    Bounty

A number of people have placed the fault with the Bounty's captain, but does anyone have details of exactly why it sank?

Based on very sketchy reports it seems that there were multiple system failures on board leading up to the abandon ship. The weather and the route were contributory factors but were not the only cause.

Depending on the sequence of failures, Naval Architects, builder, surveyors and owners may (or may not) be far more responsible than the captain.

You don't need a license for a chainsaw in the USA. If you are using a chainsaw for pay you may need a business license and insurance.

Hard to say what lessons a naval architect could learn. The captain sailed a movieset boat thru a hurricane. Obviously conditions exceded the abilty of both boat and crew.

Since the captain is no longer around you cant ask ...WHY ?

The problem with the tall ships is a Capt is not enough, to sail these ships safely it requires a fully trained and capable sailing Master.

The Capt is free to navigate, manage the vessel while the sail master is responsible for managing the vessel's course and sails.

I don't know what the crewing arangement was on the Bounty but for a 110ft Collier that as someone already posted requiring a crew compliment of 40 setting out with 16 hands into gathering seas and approaching hurricane - its a sinking looking for a place to happen.

Consider also that Capt Cook on his voyages to Aus/NZ then Hawaii had a hundred plus crew of either sea hardened ex British Navy hands and ex whalers, 500 times tougher and more experience than any crew on any vessel today.

Even going back 100yrs to the crews of Grand Banks fishing schooners, the crabbing boats etc, those were seriously hard men.

Listen to the Youtube video of the Bounty captain before the incendent.

    Full of Bravado and unprofessionalism

" Walbridge also talked about the modern navigation equipment on the vessel, though he said when the fog cleared, he liked to turn it off. "

"Lightner then asked him if he’d ever run into stormy seas."

“We chase hurricanes,” Walbridge answered. “You try and get up as close to the eye of it as you can, and you stay down in the southeast quadrant. And when it stops, you stop.

“You don’t want to get in front of it, you want to stay behind it, but you’ll also get a good ride out of a hurricane.”

To be making those sorts of ridiculous statements he can't have ever experienced a hurricane, ship killers anytime and guaranteed to sink a tall ship.

Maybe he thought he was on a Volvo 70 Ocean racer

He turns his electronics off ? Goofy Bugga

The law is very clear for licensed professional captains.

MAINTAIN A SHARP LOOKOUT AT ALL TIMES.

As a captain , on a clear day sailing West directly into the blinding sun, the only way I could lend assistance to the dismasted sailing yacht WATCHKEEPER is if I first picked up its reflection on the radar at 4 miles, Grabbed my binoculars, maintained a lookout then spotted the poor fellow.

To be professional Every piece of electronic gadgetry onboard must be used at all times to maintain a sharp lookout.

Its double unfortunate because vessels like Bounty are typically tasked with passing on SEAMANSHIP.

I this case a master seaman would have taught his crew how to read a weather forecast, avoid the hurricane , seek shelter, storm anchor , then survive to live another day

There are facebook posts from crew members while at sea before the incident in which they are reveling at their temerity and competence for facing the elements- Boasting amateurs..

As a captain, I run into these " schoonerman " as they like to refer to themselves.

    Plenty of bravado.

Almost every time I read the results of a Marine Accident Investigation it concludes that the command was deficient ,not the ships structure, systems or design.

Modern ships and gear are mighty tough .

Again, no license needed for a chain saw in the USA, understandably.

Tree removal restriction would only be from subdivision or local ordinance.
