The casual dismissal of this storm by some who did not experience its effects is unfortunate. The weather forecasters were not wrong, the media did not exaggerate and the precautions taken were neither excessive nor unnecessary. Because of those precautions the death toll - while regrettable - is comparably small, especially considering the number of people at risk and the fact that those in the most densely populated areas relied on bridges and tunnels for access to safety.

Glad they found the Captain. From what I've read he was a good captain, but no doubt underestimated the size of this storm and how his ship could handle it. We can only speculate how he drowned. I wonder if he made a swim to save the two other crew who drowned. We'll hear more of the crew accounts as time goes on I'm sure. No doubt they'll be on all the TV talk shows in the coming weeks.

It's truly special that the captain, Robin Walbridge, was a descendant of Fletcher Christian. No doubt that would fuel the passion of any sailor to serve under him. From everything I've read he was a fine man and dedicated to his ship, but made a bad decision this time. The legend of HMS Bounty continues.

    RIP

The captain is still missing and may be alive according to USCG. Body recovered was not that of captain, but Claudene Christian, crewmember.

Well, unless he had his own personal life raft or deluxe survival suit he has most likely passed. Survival at sea in those water temps (~68F) would permit him to survive no more than 40 hours. Add to that huge waves from this storm and it doesn't look good. He would be exhausted much sooner.

    Fingers crossed for a miracle.

Miracles happen and at least one is probably required in this case.

I agree, but I also think the character of this is not unlike Katrina flooding New Orleans.
Engineers, planners, and policy makers who didn't understand that we'd eventually get a storm with sea levels of this height were sleep walking.
So it's serious, but the reasons its serious are in large measure man-made.

Fortunately, Joseph, he does have a deluxe survival suit.

True, but an effort to assign blame would have to go back pretty far.

Sure...you are correct. But something in society has changed. I grew up on the East Coast and have known many hurricanes. Frankenstorm ? is this Media hype ? a new class of storm ? or simply the result of 24 hour news needing something gain views ? or is this the best way to alert modern citizens that ...yes, indeed a powerful storm is coming and you should be prepared.

Its coming and be prepared was all that was stated when I was a kid.

We should turn back time was pretty much Bob Dole's platform in 1996. He lost in a landslide.

Correction Joseph -- The Captain was not a relative of Fletcher Christian a fellow crewmember was.(missed her name on the news) In addition to the Captain she was also swept overboard and the U.S. Coast Guard has recovered her body. It's sad there was any loss of life but in this case because of her connection to Fletcher Christian especially so. Sorry for the mis communication in my post. A re read indicates why the mis info. It's my writing style of trying to include too much info in one sentence. A bad habit i picked up somehow thru writing technical manuals and one which i am constantly combatting. I apologize Geo.
