I read the article on SW, it has to hard to be a magazine these days. Since the crew weight on the 100ft boat won't be adding to the RM should the crew of the 27ft boat all be sitting in the middle of the boat so they don't add to the RM?

    Speed Dream

Here is the sailing world article, courtesy of Scuttlebutt tonight:
    http://www.sailingworld.com/blogs/racing/is-speeddream-just-a-dream
As far as monohulls beating monohulls it's already happened with the 11' Moth being the fastest sailboat under 20'-beating all cats and all monohulls.
That is not a fluke-that technology can be used on larger boats. Speed Dream at this point is not using foil technology but they are exploring a stepped planing hull-which the record setting Hydoptere.ch uses as a transition to foiling with retractable steps. I believe in the Speed Dream goal-I think it is eminently feasible and I wish them good luck.

    Is Speed Dream a foiler?
    Also from scuttlebutt:
COMMENT: You can read more about these key design features of the boat in
SW's Nov/Dec issue, and the link above hosts two videos of the boat
sailing. Fearful of projects that 'over promise and under deliver' (can you
think of one?), when their press release anoints the SpeedDream27 as "a
prototype for what will become the worlds fastest monohull", I wish for
once the sailing came before the selling. - Craig Leweck, Scuttlebutt

Count me in as a skeptic...

Unless they can get the rig to cant toward windward instead of the typical heeling to leeward, they will never beat a multihull... And whats the deal with the wedge shaped planform? Wont that simply cant the drive further downwards and to leeward increasing drag?

How fast do you think a moth would be if they had a 15degreee cant to leeward and the rig fighting the foils?

Right on target comment. It seems that Vlad is calling in all sorts of favors in getting this boat on the water in what seems to be an under funded project. With this economy, this boat is just coming along at the wrong time with the wrong features. We'll have to wait to see how it does against established fast boats in the same size and sail area range before anyone can say if it is something fresh enough, or fast enough, to justify the expenses associated.

    Tick-tock.

The article in SW says the hull weighed about 400 lbs before clear coat and non-skid applied...and there is a canting foil with a lead bulb nearly the same weight.

So judging from that I would guess all up it would be in the neighborhood of 1100-1200 pounds.

Looks like now they're trying to market the 27 on it's own as the most wonderfulest thing ever. Talk about sell before sail. It's sort of ridiculous, design and build something totally off the wall, do very little sailing, market it as the fastest thing ever and hope someone bites.

So why the attacks? Speed Dream is an innovative idea and they now have a prototype sailing. Soon actual performance will replace speculation.

I'm interested to see how the boat performs but when the they start calling it things like the fastest 27ft boat on the planet and that it's faster than a powerboat and that it's going to be a one design class I think they're getting a little ahead of themselves.

Now that I've seen more photos, it does not appear to have DSS.
I'd like to at least see a VPP comparison to justify the big claims.

Speed Dream definitely does not use DSS. They were going to but Vlad changed his mind to explore the stepped hull. I wouldn't be surprised to see him try DSS later and/ or "L" foils for the daggerboards and rudder T-foils.

There's no way that step is anything but a hindrance below 15 knots boat speed.

    Speed Dream

    =================
Well, in its original incarnation as a speedster where only top speed mattered the step is not a hindrance. But now that they're going to sell the 27 for racing I'm not so sure how that will work out. As part of a One Design class it would work but we'll have to see what results come in racing against other 27's. I'd particularly like to see this boat race against the Quant 28. The only other boat currently racing that has a step(as far as I know) is Hydroptere.ch and they can retract those steps. Parlier's cat that had stepped hulls was in trouble at boat speeds under twenty knots but over twenty knots resistance dropped to something like 20% of the pre 20 resistance.
I wish Vlad best of luck!
