Is that politics, or is it directly relevant to design intellectual property and the rights of designers (and the future of the America's Cup as it affects the incentives for new teams to get involved and their ability to get up to speed)? It seems to me this is a huge part of the design development game, and isn't that exactly what we're discussing?

Well to be pedantic, the first part of your post is obviously relevant, it would be great to know what the other designers are up to - although I believe with LR - they are just buying the rights to TNZ Mk1.

The second part is more relevant to the next AC (AC 35) is it not? I don't see how those issues will affect the designs seen in AC34. But its still interesting so just start a new thread on it.

There's a whole thread on LR Challenge here on SA: http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?showtopic=127707

Some guys have been quite patient in translating italian media to make some sense of what they are doing. Towards the end of the thread are some interesting developments. One of the better threads on SA and I've no wish to repeat all that google translate work! LR have some of the worst media ever!

Lunna Rossa have quite a team behind them: http://luna-rossa-challenge-2013.americascup.com/en/team

I think the plan was to work with ETNZ on a combined 2 boat testing programme within the limits on sharing in the protocol - then produce a final boat separately - or possibly not - as budgets allow.

Anyone got an english language link to LRs programme?

So that just leaves Artemis and White Tiger - any news of actual 72s?

Yes, it is an exaggeration, but I was referring to the fact that there wouldn't be any limit to how far a team could exploit the rule. In principle, one could operate the wing at maximum lift in a 30 kt wind and produce the righting moment to stand up to it. Since the wing is sized to race in winds from 3 to 33 kt, that means the righting moment assisted by windward foils could be 100 times what's required to fly the windward hull. That would certainly seem like it was unbounded compared to being limited by the weight of the boat!

    AC 34 on foils?

    =================
Tom, what do you think about the possibility of Oracle using platform twist to allow the windward rudder to pull down?

Except what they'd be "exploiting" wouldn't be a rule, but the lack of one, which some might consider development. But I appreciate your very knowledgeable (as always) response, Tom. I'd just like to bat it around a little more because I'm not convinced the current restriction on windward foil deployment is the ideal way to handle the issue in future America's Cups.

I'm thinking I should cut & paste your message (as a quote) to http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/sailboats/next-2016-so-americas-cup-ac-35-a-44996.html#post586414 when I have a chance so it can be discussed further at that thread. Would that be OK with you?

If Dario's the Aussie I think he is he's one more reason there should be an Aussie America's Cup effort. They're top notch in catamarans, and in hydrofoil moths.

    34th AC on Foils!

I re-read the Daily Sail interview with Dirk Cramers and found this little tidbit: (sub required-- http://www.thedailysail.com/inshore/12/63055/1/dirk-kramers-foiling-ac72-interview )

The Protocol for the 34th AC limits teams to building five pairs of daggerboards and it also appears that during the competition they can change their daggerboards daily to suit the anticipated conditions, although each time this would require them going through the procedure of obtaining a new measurement certificate.
Kramers points out making a call on which boards to use will be a difficult one. “When you start races in San Francisco, the wind builds quite quickly.”

    34th AC on Foils!

Bad news: apparently Oracle just pitchpoled in lots of wind on San Fran Bay!!
Don't know any more yet-hope everybody is ok..
Apparently the wing has been completely destroyed and the boat is being towed in upside down. No word on the crew....
    --------------
    Preliminary word --no crew injuries.

Bottom picture was taken just as the pitchpole began-
