"I'm just being honest" is the oldest excuse in the world for being gratuitously rude and obnoxious. But it isn't sufficient cover for a mean streak -- or justification for trying to level the field by tearing other people down, instead of raising yourself.

My goodness --what brought that on. Im afraid I don't agree please explain or post any rude or obnoxious posts that are not in your imagination.

Or as you Americans often say grow a pair.

I'll give you this: at least you don't try to hide the fact that you're a troll. You troll not just openly, but blatantly.

Go back to your beer and your macho daydreams, Frosty. Buy that bar girl another drink, so she'll keep telling you what a pair you have....

After the first page went politically sour I enjoyed the thread's next page or so until frostbite set in again. Hopefully this post will resist politicization . . .

Personally I too, like Troy, consider myself rich. For me this goes far beyond mere worldly wealth, although I get by in that category. I discovered boat-building late in life, although it wasn't entirely wasted before that! But after a very few years steadily worsening stiffness and pain brought it to a halt, along with many other things that I used to enjoy.

It got tothe point where I couldn't stand for more than 10 minutes without having to sit down, and couldn't sit for 10 minutes without having to stand up again. Sleep - for more than a half-hour or so before waking and having to get up and walk off the pain - was a long-forgotten experience. Being more-or-less the care-giver for my wife, also battling crippling pain, made things even worse. Finally I got referred to the proper specialist, after a few false-starts (nobody knew what the problem was) and after a couple of weeks of examinations and tests followed by a month-long diagnostic treatment the condition was identified and treatment started.

The result was bloody miraculous, there was obvious improvement within hours of starting the new medication and total freedom from pain and stiffness when I woke the next morning - after my first good night’s sleep for several years.

You guys wanna know about rich? Finally getting back to boat-building after catching up with several years-worth of jobs put on hold - priceless.

Apex1 (aka Richard) was also brutally honest.

Where advice or comments or opinions are required, being honest, is all that one would wish to hope for, not shrouded in platitudes and sugar coat the bitter pill.

I often find that it is the recipient that needs to take a reality check. Since the "advice/comment/opinion" given does not sit well with the recipient and their expectations of what may be given, or in the hope of massaging one's ego.

Brutally honest doesn't help explain to the bank manger (or wife) why you're out of pocket because someone you have never met on a website that is frequented by all sorts said, "hey you know what that's a great idea", and along one went feeling rather pleased with oneself. Rather than being thwarted at the first turn by some idiot given hard core opinions that one does not wish to address.

In my day to day work, i am required to be brutally honest. I may at times wrap it up to soften the blow, but the message is loud and clear. Why?..because it saves money and lives and leaves the endless biased emotional conjecture to those that do not wish to accept the responsibility for making such decisions that affect the aforementioned.

    My 2/c worth..

Still miss old Richard (aka Apex1). Was probably one of the most prolific and knowledgeable posters this board ever had...
His downfall or untimely exit was a direct result of his honesty and refusal to bend backwards on matters or opinions he posted. The tragedy of it all was the fact that he was right most of the time.

I have the same problem when I tell people about my country and gets branded as a racist. Truth be told, people want to hear what they want to hear, regardless if you are the more knowledgeable person on a specific subject at a given time.

Try this for size; Disclaimer - not a political debate but for illustrative purpose only.

Like many in my country we get fed-up with the fact that Nelson Mandela being made a saint that stand for all that supposedly be good.
On a local motoring forum a poster praised the big man in such a way that it creates the impression God is second to him.
I let fly with a factual reply that simply said and I quote; "never forget that he was a convicted terrorist" :!: All hell broke loose and I was cited as all that are evil, racist, nazi etc etc.

Fact remains he was a terrorist and convicted for just that and sent to jail for just that. What few people are aware of is the fact that in the early 80's the then prime minister of SA. the Hon PW Botha offered Mandela immediate freedom on the only condition that he sworn off and distance himself from violence and terrorism. Mandela refused. If he was a peaceful man he would have accepted the offer and walked free a decade sooner.

Although he did some good deeds after his release it does not changed his past as a convicted terrorist, regardless of the cause that would have killed many more innocents. But, in my view, a few right does not fix one big wrong. IOW, you cannot change your past but can dictate your future for the better.

In essence, the message I want to bring over is that the truth may hurt sometimes and it is foolish to sugar coat facts. That is when you start bullsh**ting yourself...

Insisting on calling people names or other insults or attacks is just not what the forum is about. It might be brutally honest that someone emotively or scientifically believes other members are *****s, but insisting on posting it on the public forum isn't what the site is about. It's supposed to be a place where everyone can enjoy coming and learning about boat design and boatbuilding and sharing work and projects; if someone feels a need to insult or constantly jab at others, please take it outside.

Very simple - it's a "feel good" thread, just a place where you can write about having a good day with the focus on good health as we are all getting on in years. The idea of sharing a bit of health related advice is always helpful.
So just a bit of FRIENDLY chatter amongst older guys that are into boats and boatbuilding.

    Is that so difficult?

Although I still don't understand the personal feeling of self gratification from buying something without knowing the cost I have had the strings of my heart ripped from me whilst coming face to face buy guys my age in a wheel chair with obvious down syndrome being pushed along by their mother while you sit at a bar drinking beer with girls. Talk about a sobber upper, Now that is a feeling!!!

I give money to a girl that sees me a lot , shes about 16 with something wrong with her arms, they are only about 6 inches long and her neck is cocked to one side. She has a lovelly smile and I leave her money on chairs where she is about to pass. You should see her face light up.

Theres a guy at the market that has no bottom part of him at all . I dont know how he is alive. I swear hes standing in a hole up to his waist. happy guy always smiling (about what I dont know) hes been there for years, probably there right now at the Tues market even though its raining.

I have no way of explaining the feeling of some kind of pain I get when giving some tiny bit money. But the pain I get when not giving and I cant give to them all is tremendous. I cant explain it but its the most horrible feeling possible , the conversation stops and peoples faces read like a book.

When a one legged man crawls to you at the bar and holds out his hand and you shake your head,--- you don't know this feeling.

Its probably a bit worse than the guilt feeling you get when buying food when you dont even need it and you weigh 400 kilo in America.

So yes I get feelings I feel guilt and respect for money sure I do.

Frosty- you are too bright of a guy to paint troy into this corner by mistake.
    Still "venting your spleen"?

I have no spleen to vent !!!!!!.

I never understood the thread in the fist place. I thought I had made that clear.

Any thoughts I might have of self importance are immediately absorbed and perverted in full by others poverty as I have explained above.

I am being honest,--- a trait of my origins.

I am aware that as an Englishman I am separated by not only land mass but by hundreds of years of differing cultures . That being the case the difference shall not be hidden by diplomacy as indeed it should not be.
