I agree that Churchill was a heck of a motivational speaker. He turned out to be the right guy in the right place at the right time for that, and I salute him for doing it well. It was a sizable contribution to the war effort.

But whenever he involved himself in actual military strategy and planning, he was a menace. If he had gotten his way, D Day would've happened on the cliffs of Yugoslavia instead of the beaches of France.

    Well yes and no-
He was deeply involved in the Battle of Britain & won it.

If not for this there perhaps would have been no other battles.

We had our blunderings as well- Halsey anyone..
It's simple to judge perhaps without having been the metal tested in the forge.

Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forced by the occasion.

I had "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine on 'audio books'.
He said some things way back during the Revolutionary War (leading up to it) that would still be in vogue today.
He specifically mentioned spending our Children's tax money! Without doing what the Tax money should have done!!
He was a smart dude. But he was not somebody you'd want to get stuck in an Elevator with. He has a Vocabulary as rich as William F Buckley Jr.'s was.

    How so?
I have a Canadian Inglis p35 BTW- made in a washing machine factory & one of the Canadian contributions to Lend Lease.
I also have in my shop one of the Gorton 3U engravers & there is one shown here at the Inglis factory putting the Chinese characters on Brens's that were being shipped off under that program:

We also have an entirely different take on The Revolutionary War and The War of 1812.

I think most people over here would share your views on The Revolutionary War. As taught in school and covered in the media over here, you had a legitimate grievance. The date of the Boston Tea Party was one I had to learn at school.

The War of 1812 is a different matter, few would know who were the participants. The likely guess would be it was between Napoleon and Russia about which Tchaikovsky wrote an overture. ;)

Most Canadians - of course - and a few Americans identify it as the attack on Canada by the US, thankfully followed by 200 years of peace here and a bunch of wars on the same side elsewhere, and yet despite the fact that British troops fought in the war of 1812 very few Brits have heard of it.
