Cats are not even useful at catching rats or mice, and cats have no sense of conservation as they will kill everything that they can... - I watch the met regularly, in particular, the following links The charts do not indicate favourable direction (significantly Cains to Samarai - as a northerly set there is best for me and inside the reef is not a significant concern except for Wide Bay bar and around Shoalwater Bay region where tidal flows and lack of shelter makes overnight stops not very comfortable... I have no intention of making overnight passages inside the reef... Nor long haul unnecessary passages outside the reef apart from Cairns to Samarai...

I am not sure of the PNG trip yet (politics needs to settle in), so may venture N and suffer postal delays to finalise PNG visas to travel by boat... I am also waiting for replies from several letters dispatched recently seeking Melanesian employment...

 

Animal cruelty is despicable, well it certainly is --do you know where there has been any.

Incidentally while I was waiting for the ferry as there is only 2 per day during Ramadan I noticed many different variety of ants walking along the wall. Squashing one dead has some going berserk and some --the big red ones took the body away.

Even if I badly mutilated a big red another would help it back to the nest I suppose.

Do they have ant hospital.

Talking of depth sounders I have 2 ( one for the bridge) that fire straight the hull. They are mm apart in an oil bath. I was told they would interfere with each other and would not work.

Horse manuere they are 2 different frequencies 50 and 150 (I think) and they both work fine.

One is Auusi and one is US Humminbird and Eagle.

No not expensive flash stuff,-- just needs to tell me how deep it is that all.

 

Yep, my secondary depth instrument is a 15ft long "glass" fishing rod section. . . . I can even tell the nature of the bottom. . . . - - - - If I cannot see the bottom and the colour is deep blue - IT IS DEEP ENOUGH . . . If the water is murky-yellow following a solid rain event over adjacent land, then it may be shallow, and if I can feel the boat slowing in a jerky manner IT IS TOO SHALLOW. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Mas: there were a number of people selling RO systems and the starting price seemed to be around the $7K mark for anything with reasonable output. Still a lot of dollars. Lithium batteries are getting mainstream though, current cost ~3.5X lead-acids but as you only need half as many, not as bad as it looks. I've a year to go before buying mine so I've hopes the price will drop further.

Thanks - I should be able to do a reasonable 60litre/hour system for less than Au$4000 but it depends on "rip-off" attitude of suppliers of the 40 inch long main filter and element contained therein (usually sealed with the preservative held inside), and when set up the whole "pickling content" is flushed out... I am in no hurry at this point in time...

With the GEC refusing to go away, the high-tech stuff needing a vibrant economy, - just will not happen... (batteries and Ro watermakers etc)

PV panels have significantly dropped in price (3 years ago my panels were about $700 each, now I see - - - - "solarconsultants.net.au - 2kw Inverter 8/190w panels $1590" - - - - 8 - of the same capacity -, plus an inverter for $1590) I expect that LifePO4 batteries will come down significantly as soon as capacity is met for electric cars and surplus volume reduces the price... ? ?

I'm hoping that the lithium batteries drop further but IMO they're cost-competitive with lead-acids now if you consider their superior characteristics - esp for weight-limited vessels like catamarans. Lead-acids are just a bit more ballast for me. What I like is the ability to draw down to 20% or less, so 80% useable capacity, and the ability to fast-charge them thereby minimising engine running time. Running my main engine just to charge batteries is inefficient and expensive. Plus the claimed number of cycles over the batteries' lifetime leads one to believe that, if you take some care, they should last 2X as long as lead-acids subject to the same usage pattern.

As for the PV panels, Ebay price seems around $270 for 200 watts which is getting very close to my $1/watt buy point for tiling my house roof with them. Marine panels have a premium which may be reflected in higher quality build, I don't know as I haven't really looked into it. I'm limited on deck space anyway and intend to ignore marine PV panel issues until I'm ready to spend money - this time next year I expect.
