MOD70 Circuit Revealed

On the occasion of the KRYS Match from 6 to 8 October, the MOD70s will be racing in La Trinite sur Mer (France) and, with them, a contingent of sailors with eloquent track records: Michel Desjoyeaux, Sebastien Josse, Roland Jourdain, Steve Ravussin, Sidney Gavignet and lots more besides. The latter are preparing to do battle for the first time in the history of this new, unique international series which combines offshore and inshore races aboard one-design trimarans.

Though the KRYS Match is the inaugural event of the Multi One Championship, the real launch of the latter will take place in July 2012 during the KRYS Ocean Race, a crewed transatlantic race which will set off from New York (USA) bound for Brest (France). As such this exhibition in La Trinite will serve as a trial run for the majority of protagonists involved in the MOD70 circuit.

- The KRYS MATCHES will be run from Thursday 6 October to Saturday 8 October 2011.
- The fleet is to be moored at the Loic Caradec dock, behind the harbour master�s office from Wednesday 5 October 1200 hours.
- Race for Water and Gitana 11 are on site training from Monday 3 October.
- The arrivals of Veolia Environnement and Foncia are scheduled on the morning of Wednesday 5 October.
- The races can be viewed from the Kerbihan headland, in La Trinite sur Mer, every afternoon from 1400 to 1800 hours or from a giant screen in the village.
- The KRYS MATCHES are inshore races with a crew of 8.
- The KRYS MATCH village has been set up near the harbour master�s office in the port of La Trinite sur Mer.
- The Multi One Attitude Foundation space will play host to the public from 1000 to 1900 hours.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

New York will be start city for the new MOD70 class's first ever
trans-oceanic race. The class, a one-design 70 foot trimaran conceived in
2009 and designed by VPLP to provide evenly matched high speed racing, will
set off on July 7th for the MOD 70 KRYS Ocean Race's across the North
Atlantic to a finish in Brest, France.

The five teams will initially be based in Newport, Rhode Island at the
Newport Shipyard between June 28-July 2. Ahead of this 2950 nm race, a 120
nm prologue from Newport to New York starts on July 2 to a finish line off
New York's iconic Statue of Liberty on July 3rd. The fleet will then dock
at Manhattan's tranquil North Cove Marina. On July 5th, a speed match will
be held on the Hudson River at the foot of the Statue of Liberty.

The MOD 70 KRYS Ocean Race will begin on July 7 at 1100hrs (EDT). Compete
will be:

Edmond de Rothschild Group - Sebastien Josse
Spindrift Racing - Yann Guichard

MOD70's are gathering in New York for the upcoming race. Here is a photo courtesy of Carbon Club of the boats that have arrived so far.

 

Theres been some updates to the MOD70 website and they now have a MOD70 virtual Ocean Race game set up on the page might have a crack at that. The ex Veolia MOD70 has been purchased by the Multi One Design organisation and is able to be sold as a turn key team ready to race now if only I had some spare millions lying around .

Gooday bloke - thought if I stayed out-a-here- hoping - someone else would chip in & have they're say. but alas - it's me again.

Bought 6 lotto tickets for tonite - buckleys chance - hey - but 1 never knows - a win would get Doug a new back, Steve a 'C' class winner - you a round the world race - go go boat - Gary a whole bay all to himself - without any complaints & me a 'lill 40' wing tri & then everyone would be happy - sipping 'sundowners' c/w family & kids - somewhere watching the start of some - SUPA smart race we wish we were - on board at the start - but - - just maybe - if'n I do - - then - - I will ! ! ! ! !

Corley - - It would take a few mil $'s - each & every year just to do the up-keep & get it to the starting line. Better things to do with yours & my money - for sure - but - none the less - a great dream - & it's mine also, Ciao, james

 

Sadly I'm well aware of the economics of running such a boat it's really only a sponsored option (one with deep pockets) and in Australia we dont have the general interest in ocean racing that they do in France so sponsorship on that scale is unlikely or impossible. Well with enough determination we can do the best we can and that is really all that matters in the scheme of things. I still think Steve could win that (little) Americas Cup hopefully Doug's back will recover to some extent, Gary will be blessed with a good settlement to his annoying resident issues and you will get that 40' tri cranking with a wing.

Thus far I've not been able to beat Steve Ravussin's sprint time in the game it's close to a perfect run a great start and no mistakes and maximum speed at all times. It's good for a laugh and worth firing up and having a go.

 

Damn that Ravussin gets a good start, I had my bow millimetres in front of his and I crossed to early, his must be perfect. Couldn't catch him either, best I got was 1:02.29, point 4 of a second behind him. Good for giggles

Best run I've had is 1:02.35 I found that you can shave the turning buoy a little tighter but lost the advantage by too many steering inputs on the final leg. I'll have to have a go on our home pc the framerates a bit slow on my netbook.

 

Yes I've found I can be right on Ravussin at the mark and cut inside him but getting the turn perfect and not having to correct is the hard part, I'll get him eventually or die of old age trying

Oh and does this mean the other skippers should be sacked and their jobs given to us "sorry work cant make it in for a while I'm skippering a 70ft tri across the Atlantic" yeah I wish

Prelude to a Prologue MOD70 teams prepare to race Newport to New York

Prelude to the Prologue

Sunday. There is no such thing as a day of rest on the KRYS OCEAN RACE at the Newport Shipyard where the shore crews and race teams know that they now have less than 24 hours left before the prologue race from Newport to New York.


The Prologue starts Monday 5 PM for the short sprint to the Big Apple which will be sailed with media and VIP guest crews aboard, allowing them the first ever chance to experience, at first hand, life on board the MOD70’s in race mode. Though there are no race points at stake for the prologue, the challenge to be first into New York is one that all five teams will not take lightly.

Equally, though, just as on the KRYS OCEAN RACE itself, this preliminary course will be about finding the right balance, to make sure the boats reach New York in the same race-ready shape as they leave Newport. Once the MOD70’s are in Manhattan’s North Cove Marina, where they will be based until the start of the Transatlantic on 7th July, the boats are effectively ‘locked down’ with no further work allowed by their technical teams.

With a quickly changing weather forecast the race direction have not yet chosen which of the three courses will be set:

One course is about 150 miles leaving Newport, to Block Island to starboard, to Long Island to starboard, finishing in New York. The second is 220 miles to a point to the south of Newport and the third is 320 miles. The objective is to have the boats finishing in New York at around midday.

While the final preliminaries are running down in Newport, Groupe Edmond de Rothschild’s skipper Sébastien Josse has been overseeing the team’s build up to the start. He has been a keen observer of the America’s Cup World Series and has cast an eye to the Volvo Ocean Race where the French Groupama team – which he sailed with – is presently on course to win. But Josse says he would not swap his current role for anything….

“I am very proud and pleased for the guys on Groupama, to see French guys ready to beat everyone…..but for me in my personal life this is the one opportunity to do this and it is one not to be missed.” Josse smiles, “ Here I have a sponsor who says ‘OK, you have no experience in multihulls but here is a chance for you. So when this opportunity came I seized it with both hands, I went straight for it. I come from monohulls and I did that for ten years, I know I can do the Route du Rhum, my own campaigns in the future, I am really just so happy to be here with this chance.”

“This is the most exciting thing I have done. It is brand new. I started with clean sheet of paper….and I love to go fast in all the sailing I do, Moth sailing, kite surfing, wind surfing, a lot of things like that. With these types of boats you go fast, average 30-32 knots. Our fastest is 38.6kts but we can go 40 I am sure.”

Ryan Breymaier is the only American sailor among the KRYS OCEAN RACE crews. Originally from Annapolis, Breymaier lived in Newport for a couple of years and is a huge fan of this sailing city. He sails on Musandam-Oman Sail with French skipper Sidney Gavignet with a crew that includes native Omani sailors and English record breaking sailor Brian Thompson.

Breymaier completed his first non stop round the world race last year, finishing fifth in the two handed Barcelona World Race with his German co-skipper Boris Herrmann. After training extensively with Roland ‘Bilou’ Jourdain’s MOD70 Veolia Environnement team, which had to withdraw when their sponsorship stopped, Breymaier is now racing with the Musandam-Oman Sail project, accumulating more than 14,000 ocean miles on the MOD70’s.

“I used to live here for a while’ Breymaier says, “and I know so many people here and all the places to hang out and so that has been very nice, but that has been balanced with a lot of boat work. But it is great to be in such an awesome place to be, especially with the Cup in town. It is such a vibrant town which is so interested in everything sailing.”

“It is a shame I am the only American in this race and that we have not yet figured out how to have an American team involved. I have been trying but it is not that easy. It would be really good to have more Americans interested in offshore sailing in general and MOD70’s specifically, but the only way to have that happen is with events like this now. I think we have sowed the seeds being here. Everyone has wanted to come sailing on the boats. All the owners of the big boats here have taken an interest here when they have come down the dock. They have stopped by and these are the kind of people who could put together a programme for these kind of boats.”

“ Everyone I have met here can’t help but be interested in this KRYS OCEAN RACE.

This town embraces anything to do with sailing, but this type of sailing has really been popularised to huge extent by the change to multihulls of the America’s Cup and so that is good for this too.”

 

I managed to do a run of 1:02.17 watch out Steve! I'm going for your record!. The records listed on the rankings board puts the fastest time as 1:01.29 those guys must really have no life thats all I can say.
