I have to agree with Frosty's tongue in cheek remark in part.. The USPS has taken a huge beating in recent years, not so much fro UPS and others, but email and other instant communication methods. Don't get me wrong UPS and FedX did put a hurting on them, but they still carried the bulk of junk mail, direct marketing advertising, business billing, etc. Now, billing is direct deposit or online transfer, focused marketing is moving to personal communication devices and letter carrying has been dieing a slow lingering death as the baby boomers attempt to maintain their ever dwindling Christmas card lists. It's probably not long before we have to consider dramatic changes to the USPS. It's a bit like the steam engine manufactures of the late 19th century world. They once built the highest tech devices around, but were supplanted by better devices, in fairly short order.

I'm glad they finally arrived Troy. You should have enough information to sort out the important stuff. You'll still have plenty of problem solving to dance around with and you have my number.

Frosty your avatar seems a similar situation. Is that your mom? It would go a long way towards explaining your last avatar. There are plenty of places on line, to have these types of barb tossing contests, but this isn't one of them.

I think its admirable that you should be standing up for troy but dont know why. He has me on ignore so he does'nt know what i post yet still replies to it anyway.

Im positive you dont understand the situation, he criticizes my posts but doesnt read them. He just guesses.

Now --I ask you does that seem like the action of a grown up.

If Im on ignore then ignore me.

 

Frosty, everyone understands the situation, you're a champ in tossing barbs at some and Troy is one of them that can't resist to answer. Best Troy follows your last advice as I don't expect much improvement from your side, although that would be a good thing too . . . :idea:

If I can just politely disagree and reiterate my original position.

If Im on ignore (and I would dearly love that to be) then why does he reply.

He writes that he does not know what I said but it was twaddle.

I would not for example expect rubbish like that from you or Par and thanks for the points deduction.

 

I have Frosty on ignore for the third time, and this time I won't be taking him off. I'm tired of him following me around boatdesign.net to make anti-American comments, no matter what the original subject of a thread may be.

But trying to hijack my own thread about my own boat, and turn it into a forum for his snotty remarks instead, is beyond the pale. Of course he's infamous for sidetracking threads and turning them into arenas for petty squabbling.... I would respectfully ask that other posters in this thread just ignore any of his comments here, and maybe we can get back to discussing Egress.

I spent what little free time I had this afternoon wondering what the best steering system for her would be. Cable? Hydraulic? Something else? I know little about steering systems, except for cable steering on relatively small ski boats and the like.

Hey I know all about hydraulic steering Ive fitted loads of them and altered displacements to change ratios for auto pilots etc.

But you wont get this post anyway.

 

Troy, hydraulic steering gives the option of a second steering station and simplifies autopilot installation.
No feedback cable steering works well if you are going the KISS route.

 

I'd recommend the Teleflex "Safe-T Helm", (model no. SH5015P). It's fairly inexpensive, a NFB unit and cables are easy enough to find too.

 

I just finished doing a little reading up on NFB units. But I couldn't find any reference to that particular model number, even on the search engine at Teleflex's home page.

The main complaint I saw on forums was that the NFB steering can be stiff, compared to a non-NFB system. But I doubt that would be a problem here, since Egress will have a fairly small motor (or pair) and a good-sized spoke wheel.

 

Okay, they've discontinued the regular helms and now only offer the NOFB in the Safe-T setup. I typed the model number wrong anyway. It's SH5150P, now irrelevant. The Safe-T QC rotary (SH5094P) is a simple rotary helm, 3 turns lock to lock. The wheel for this helm doesn't have to be very big. A standard automotive style wheel can be used, though a destroyer wheel or the one I drew up can work just as well.

I was looking at this drawing and specs from PAR's gallery and the high far forward wheelhouse and cabin combined with the shallow draft gets me wondering where she get the lateral resistance from to handle side wind and still keep course, or will she need a bow dagger or bow centerboard to do that . . .

How much side wind can she handle and keep course as she is without a board . . ? ?

No doubts about the design, just think I'm missing something here and want to learn how this is handled . . .

It is a hard-chined boat with vertical hull walls, I am pretty sure it will not have problems you have mentioned.
