Basically he defines in this lecture just how bad the state of the oceans really is, and that was 3 years ago. He'd been doing the lecture for about a year when the film was made and the research probably ended a year or two before that. So really we're about 5 years on into his prediction. Pretty frightening stuff, particularly coming from someone who's arguably the worlds leading ocean science researcher.

The oceans have most definitely gone anaerobic before and so would likely again if given the right set of influences, Ole DR Jackson spends an hour describing just why he believes we have already triggered those conditions and what if anything we can do about the various scenarios of how bad its likely to be.

You don't even need to do research to see the changes in the ocean. There is a huge change in the amount of life in the ocean from when I started boating in the late 1980's to now.

Anyone who has actively cruised or lived aboard for those years can tell you there is only one life form in the ocean that has increased - and that is jelly fish.

Regular fish, lobster, etc... Are all on a major decline.

What will really be scary is when the atmosphere acts like the oceans and end up with spots that don't support life. Increased co2, co, etc... Throws off the balance of the air we breathe.

 

Alarmist crap, not necessarily yours, Catbuilder, but you may wear the shoe if it is a good fit. Do you want to try on a shoe Boston has had his foot in, not knowing where its been? Hot air rises. How else could this alarmist crap go to the top? Warm water rises, too. That is why oceans can't become static. Be glad for warm. The system always seeks equilibrium but dynamic forces always keep the system in flux. Sunlight creates circulation of both water and air.

 

But Hoyt... you talk as if the atmosphere is infinite. Remember when they used to say that about the ocean?

Im more concerned with overall averages, actually. If there is more CO2 in the atmosphere, there is less O2 to breathe. Great for plants. Not so great for animals like us.

 

There is very little CO2 in the atmosphere relatively speaking and if you reduce it too much plant life will suffer. If you want to make energy from algae then it must be fed.

Well, I'm still concerned. More about CO than CO2 though. How poison is CO? Our cars dump that stuff into the atmosphere like there is no tomorrow.

The above statement also shows why the "ozone hole" is another fraud perpetrated on us. We couldn't destroy the "ozone layer" if we tried, even with CFC's.

CO2 is currently 392 ppm. It would have to increase 25x just to represent 1% of the earths atmosphere. I can't see CO2 disturbing the balance of what we breath in any meaningful way.

Ah, well I'm glad to hear it. This was just a "feeling", nothing I researched.

I accept these facts you guys posted and feel good to not have to worry anymore about those two pollutants.

Being busy building the boat, I have only limited time for research. Glad the online research department could take care of that one for me.
