A year after the tsunami, I still see boats of 25-40 meters perched kilometers inland. I realize that, in the scale of the disaster, the fate of these boats is not an immediate concern, but I'd like to know if (and how) these boats will be returned to the sea. Or will most of them just be scrapped?

Most will be ground up for fuel at the local land fill. You looking for a deal at a scratch and dent sale on a Japanese fishing boat?

There has been talk on the local media of leaving some of them where they are, as a reminder and memorial. The very large trawler that is some 800m inland (most common image) already has a shrine located at its base.

No, I'm not looking for a deal...just curious about how you handle such enormous objects so far from the water without wrecking them. I'm guessing that many of the owners perished as well, so now these boats are either a public nuisance or owned by their insurers.

At least after Katrina most boats like this were cut up, lots of the boats were either air lifted by heavy lift helicopters back into the water or lifted by cranes onto flat beds and trucked to the water, but none were left in place. Though it wouldn't surprise me if Japan left a few either.

    That's quite a picture...
But even if you could find enough heavy dollies to set it on, you'd still have to create a clear path back to the water. I hear the hiss of cutting torches.

Boats make a unique reference point for inland navigators---go to the boat, turn left. Also: if you're going to build a house, make sure you are uphill from the boat!

Stu: Most will be scrapped, how soon depends on radiation levels.

Bloomberg News is reporting a Japanese fishing boat swept out to sea by the tsunami last year has been located drifting off the coast of Canada....does the Pacific have a clockwise current north of the equator similar to the Gulf Stream in the north Atlantic?
