Yes that is true, it has to end up as a vessel, but deck area is more important in determining principle dimensions and volume for a passenger vessel. And there is also vessel use, short voyage, day trip, overnight, extended voyage...etc. All of this, plus deckhouse, heads and public space/passageways will determine what the necessary passenger deck area and enclosed volume which leads to the required displacement.

 

I'm just wondering why you are asking the very same questions on the SNAME webforum too?

 

Guys, this is a fellow that is designing a 300 passenger ferry. He's asked nothing but the most basic of questions and I frankly refuse to enable any of his requests, for fear he may assemble enough cobbled together information, to befall this design on some unsuspecting passengers and crew. That part of the world has way too many of these things flopping over and drowning folks, so other then offering the Simpsons rule or other method for numerical integration, for him to Google and get bogged down with, I think we should be careful what gets offered. It's quite obvious he hasn't the foggiest idea what's involved, but considering the lack of over site in this area of the world, a real concern if you ask me.

 

I haven't thought of the risk PAR is talking about, didn't think it would harm to answer it...

In the SNAME post, he says he is a student. Well, when I was a student I did something amazing by today's world, i went to the library! .....or I asked my tutor for guidance where to look in the library. It is called research, the more you do the easier it becomes and the places to look for data is quicker.

The internet generation seems not be taught this simple procedure.

i am sorry if u had thought in that context ,well the question i asked was a doubt which is nothing to do with my academics .i m not introduced to ship design yet in my course ,
i asked something which struck into my head one late night[reading an article ,i just wanted to clear my doubt instantly hence i thought putting it into the forum as it was very difficult to get into a library or ask my tutor late night .anyway i got it cleared nw.
out of curiosity i posted the queries .probably i wouldnt do it again .

I was lucky to live 100m from University's library... Actually I was sitting there in reading hall (no copy machines those days!) and freezing (damned cold and no heating early 90-s in Ukraine) instead of attending lectures in Psychology and Political Science. Marchai's books ons sailcraft dynamics and paper by Herreshoff were my favourite... After that being 4th year student, I developed few versions of VPPs and finally sailcraft tacking simulator... it was damned cold in students hostel and I used to put electrical cooker under chair when sitting with computer. Nice days!

No need to apologise, we all have to start somewhere, But....

Just remember to engage your brain, the stuff you're supposed to exercise and use when at university, rather than grabbing for the PC and internet first.

If you find references/sources that you either don't understand or wish to discuss certain aspects of why this or that, that is fine. That's what the forum is ostensibly about. But, as a student it is your goal to find the source to begin with, it is part of your "hidden curriculum". However, if you ask very simple basic questions without even bothering to do basic research first to know what it is you're actually asking about, this only makes you look foolish, not inquisitive.

 

I got to use a computer too, but it wasn't permitted during class, mostly because desk tops, let alone lap tops hadn't been invented yet. The computer was an IBM system 3.

I too am quite amazed of the lack of inventiveness seen with students in recent generations. When I was looking to learn something, I could go to sections in the local library where I'd read every single book on the subject. Now, Google knows all and is never wrong. What a lose.

I agree with you, libraries are a good place to keep warm
