I wouldn't be surprised. The Coast Guard lifts people off of boats regularly that are supposedly in distress, and three or more months later the boat is found doing just fine. Recently one boat that the people were taken off of on the Atlantic coast, turned up floating just fine off Spain.

 

There was a great case here in South Western Oz; a sailboat was left at low tide with a short amount of anchor chain and it up and left with the tide.

It drifted around in the Sth Indian ocean for several months, weathered a storm or two and several gales and was found by a commercial fishing vessel halfway to SA. The boat was bought as is where is off the insurer for a small pittance and a prize crew sailed it back to Perth.

 

Boat abandoned off Nantucket found in Spain

For more than three years, she wandered the sea, without a captain or crew. But last week, she was found off the coast of Spain, about 3,500 nautical miles from her home in Nantucket.

The Queen Bee, a 26-foot pleasure boat, was left adrift after stormy conditions tossed her passengers overboard off the coast of Nantucket on Aug. 25, 2008.

Incredibly, on Jan. 17, the abandoned boat was discovered 20 miles off the northern coast of Spain, the US Coast Guard said yesterday.

It happens frequently. For many many years I have been telling boat owners, "stay with the boat." You may think you can't stand any more but the boat can stand a lot more than you can. Stay with the boat!
