We cannot help you, you have to help yourself.

Start going around and look at the boats others use and first see what you have a liking for. There are hundreds and hundreds of different boats and a lot of different types of boats.

    View unfolded panels in Delftwhip

    Hello,

You must work with layers. Select layer and mark it "developable."
Then go to "View" and select "Plate Developments..." Separate each chine to a separate layer to be able to have correct panels. The picture shows how to do it.

Open various models and explore them. Move the points around. Look at various settings. Read the manual. Notice where things on on layers in a given model. Use Ctrl+left-click to see which curves are continuous in any direction.

Be sure to make COPIES and work from them so you have an immediately-available, pristine version if you need to start over.

If you are working with the free version of DelftShip you can't save the developed plates, though you can visually examine the results.

Free!Ship, and Free!Ship plus, which are very similar in operation to DelftShip, does allow you to save the developed plates. However, the file compatibility between these programs is not very good. Roughly speaking you can assume there is no file compatibility between the programs, although there is a very limited amount of file compatibility.

But, you can backwards save to an older format (2.6, IIRC) from Delftship to Freeship 2.6/Freeship +/Hydronship 3.3 Plus Test.

However, it won't be fun going back and forth. At some point, it becomes exasperating and you will have to choose where you want to stay if you're going to constantly refine the model. If you're not doing combatants or naval type vessels, then maybe stick with DelftShip or Delftship Pro if you can afford it. There, the layers manipulations is much easier, especially if you find the worksheet-like view easier, since you can all-at-once see what layers are on, which have various properties on and off, and what colors are in use on all the layers.

However, from DS/DS Pro, do not expect hydros for larger vessels/craft -- especially if you want non-yacht, very fast speed, large displacement, turn prediction, powering, and other information that DS Pro (other than what for-pay extensions may exist) won't provide. I've used all three (bought DS Pro), but since I'm not designing yachts, and I enjoy the FS+/Hydronship reports, I exported my model and have been in FS+ for maybe the past 9 months.

But, as suggested above, at least in FS/FS+Hydronship, you can save your work, even export it and also import from various sources if you find a to-be-studied file from a source that FS/FS+ can import.

    Have FUN!

I tried exporting from Freeship+ to a .fef file and importing back into delftship. It gives me an error message. I think that freeship+ is probably exporting OK because I can import the file back into freeship+, so I think there is something wrong with the delftship import. However, I do not have the latest version of delftship. It is possible that the latest version of delftship may work. By the way, I am using the free version of delftship.
