Hi everyone, tornados hiting just to the south of me, hiting big time to the west of me and to the north of me. I'm in N.W. Knoxville, in the country but not far out, rather close to subdivisions and shopping some 2 miles. Warnings coming about every 6-10 minutes on TV. I'm not worried as there are few mobile homes out here and tornados always head for mobile homes--
God does not like them. Ha. Be a long night, I'm safe but many are in potential trouble and many are already destroyed. Please give them your best wishes.

Tornados are one of Natures most powerful forces, and are amazing to see but not experience. Lots of people need all your best wishes.

Thanks Bos. I appreciate your concern. sr I fear a lot of people are going to pass tonight--all could have been prevented.

You take care, rasorinc. I was passing through your area last April when all hit the fan, having been run out of the Mammoth Cave area by severe weather, hunkered down in Mt. Juliet before moving on with bad weather chasing us all the way to Florida, the day so many died in the Southeast from the tornadoes.

Thanks for the headsup! I just turned the TV on. I'm a full time RVer for the past 20 years.

Oh lovely, first words out of the TV are "tennisball sized hail". I hate hail.

I had another look at the tsunami in Japan a few days back after 'discovering' it again on my PC. Awesome and scary.

I hate hail as well, especially tennis ball sized good grief. We had hail like that some years ago here in Pretoria, my brothers car was scrap after it was caught in it.

It was the magnetude of it that shocked me. For some reason I didn't feel the same the first time I saw it. I saw some cars traveling on a road parallel with the coast when the water broke over the shore. Can only imagine... with nowhere to go !

    Keep your head down, Rasor.

And here, I thought we were going to have a nice discussion on the Tornado hull form! :)

Saw this in BBc this morning. My first impression was for my jaw to hit my chest, do you really live in wood and plaster board houses?

Whilst I am sorry for the occupants build a proper house for Petes sake , one out of bricks like the 3 little pigs did eventually.

A house built in that way is not allowed in uk and again whilst I admire the tenacity of a spider to build and re build its web I would have thought a brick house would be better especially as you KNOW that typhoons are common in that area.

It is a curious thing why we Americans mostly live in wood and plaster board (or as we call it, sheetrock) houses. Even very large apartment complexes are made out of it. Does anyone know why this is?

Frosty, not trying to start anything, but I was just looking at the news and saw a picture of the brick high school building in the same town. In the picture you can see that it was made from brick and even had very large steel girders are part of the construction. The brick now lays on the ground and the huge steel i beams are twisted.

These are tornadoes, not typhoons. The wind from a tornado is much more powerful. Typically, nobody can measure the wind inside a strong tornado because everything is destroyed in its path.

Once, they were able to measure wind speed inside a major tornado. The wind was clocked at 302MPH or 486km/h. It doesn't matter what structure you are in, unless you are underground, when one of those hits.

Stress is a terrible thing, worrying if one of these things will have taken your house and car or you may be hit by a cow whilst you are at work would im sure make me think of moving.

In the light of the fact that you KNOW that many will pass every year I am wrong to say that I would 'think' about moving but would have already done so.

Neither would I live by a river prone to flooding or at the end of an airport runway or by a factory that uses toxic chemicals etc etc.

BUT--if for some reason that I can not imagine I had to live there it would not be in a wood and plaster board house, If it had to be underground or semi underground so be it.

A 747 survives winds of these speed and does not break up!!!! I would build one house properly rather than a dozen badly.

There will always be some building left standing --take a carefull look at it and replicate its construction.
