We are entering our Team CAL500 in the 2013 Cowes to Monte-Carlo World Cup Powerboat Grand Prix. At 2,400 nautical miles, it is considered to be the longest and toughest offshore powerboat race in the world. Team CAL500 will represent the USA against 50 entries from all over the world.
Our powerboat of choice is based on the MSV designed in 1972 by legendary offshore racer, Sonny Miller. As an aerospace engineer he brought cutting edge technology and innovation to the sport. For 2013, we have modified the original design specifically for this marathon endurance race. From the legendary ‘Popeye’ to the more famous ‘La Tortuga I & II’, the MSV – which some consider to be the first ‘superboat’ - has a proven design which has won two U.S. Championships and various Class-5 races. A brief history along with some vintage photos of the MSV can be seen at our website: www.cal500.com.

I never followed offshore racing. How does the race committee adjust schedules to avoid weather induced demolition derbies ? Or is it ...Dems dat died were the lucky ones ?

The widebody MSV. It is a wider version of the old MSV. I am laying the hull for the race in a month or so. It is 42' by 11'6". We are running diesels at about 2000HP

What other boats are in the race? I spot donzi and sunseeker on competitors. Do you know what boats you will race against?

    Previous Builders: Sonic Marine Miami.

Is 'Sonic Marine' Sonic USA that built this hull too?

Sonic Marine is one of the companies that built that model.
