Yacht Yogi sinks

Here comes the track from the marinetraffic.com site (http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?oldmmsi=228000800&zoom=10&olddate=lastknown#), I've composed the pic by capturing the map at two zoom levels. The yacht seem to have been anchored between h20.35 of 15.02.2012 till h5.10 of 16.02.2012 when she started heading south. The last recorded point shows her moving at 8.6 kts at h5.17 of 16.02.2012 .
I can see she was crossing the routes of the local ferries, if that can mean something.

Seems there was mechanical failure of main. In this case you have no speed or maneuverability.
For all that they may have either separate main genset or simply emergency genset working.
I have strong doubts about possibility of flooding ER through exhaust pipes.

 

Hmmm...Those are islands in the sea of Marmara near the shipyard who built her. The boat was happy then and perhaps picking up a pilot ?.

Is there a track at the time of emercency near Skiros in the NW Aegen .
Skiros is on rumbline between the CanaKale traffic separtaion zone and Athens when passing thru the windblasted Steno Kafirea between Andros Island and Evvoia

Too bad...for some reason Megayachts often travel in AIS Stealth mode. Part of the image I guess. Interesting that they didnt choose to become visable when trouble developed.

For security reasons too. Partly because super-rich yacht owners and members of their families are a very tasty prey for kidnappers, and partly because in many cases their money comes from not so limpid operations which earns them a lots of dangerous buddies and enemies too. Yah VIPs I guess .......but the yacht was without guests transiting a high traffic zone during bad weather...then initiated an emergency .

AIS is a very valuable tool to avoid collision and broadcast safety info. . On a sailing yacht my radar is stunted in bad weather..AIS gives me a set of eyes, not affected by sea state or degraded by wet sails, when monitoring traffic . I would say the captain was either irresponsible or ordered by the management company to remain stealth. Who is the management company for Yogi ?

 

And security...Years ago I dis a project on a a yacht fitted with electrified lifelines and a CO2 system that could be fired off the asphyxiate intruders. Rich folks have enemies. The yacht even carried anti shark nets to protect swimmers. The owner was err emm Columbian

 

Me too. Besides, on videos of rescue is unlikely that engine room is flooded. It looks more like lower deck cabins are flooded through side windows.

 

except AIS is not a collision avoidance tool under the rules
( except for small boats to be sure they get out of the way)

 

Many devices on a ship are non required anti collision tools but would be foolish to operate professionally without. Clean windows for instance.

Also I see no RED over RED the captain is dead status lights flown. Perhaps her crew were not up to the task

Maybe because the captain was still alive and somewhat superstitious.

 

Additionally a Mega Yachts boat show image may suffer if seen as a Red Light District............................perhaps manegment forbids red over red

I suspect that a nervous apprehension has gripped the concrete canyons of Wall street as the bankers and Hedge Fund managers stress out when thinking...Could My Mega Be Next ? Those dam stylists.............

 

Maybe one day yacht owners will understand that first function of a ship is being able to navigate.
