I'm sorry, but I'm completely unable to work up any righteous indignation over this incident.

Stupid of the Marines involved? Of course. A heinous act? Of course not. If they'd been pissing on some live Taliban instead, I might understand some of the indignation -- although that wouldn't hold a candle to what the Taliban themselves do to their own countrymen, much less to Americans.

And this nonsense about our troops being ambassadors representing our country is just that: nonsense. Those guys were sent over there to kill people who are trying to kill them, not to conduct diplomatic missions.

I don't have "indignation" but neither do I "condone" an act like this.
I don't make judgements based on a short internet clip either.
If a fellow solider had be killed moments before or whatever, I'm not surprised to see bad judgement surrounded by the atrocities of war.

However, a solider's job is to win, and not only thru violence. Their job is to increase safety and reduce the enemy. This act will cost lives and be used to recruit others to violence, etc. It's regrettable.

I have to get back in because I can't believe what I read here.

That sounds like an admission of defeat, or the impossibility to win the war. Hope that's not the official stance about the future of the area. If the Taliban take over as soon as the Americans leave, then it was all useless, all the death and destruction for nothing. The same fate the Soviets have experienced over there.

A perfectly normal act by A marine and was probably an order from some senior.

Killing is difficult for some and have trouble with it de humanizing the enemy helps. The Germans were masters of it reducing Jews to vermin and killing them as.

The VDO should not have been taken, dont think its going to stop will you.

It was not meant for public vewing.

I take it you mean "the same fate" there. And both wars financed by heroin. Resistance would have crumbled without it.

when the day comes our guys cut off a prisoners head with a butter knife. Then I'll think, maybe, we've got a problem. Although I'm down with an eye for an eye works just fine with some scumbag who can't figure out that hiding behind his own wife and kids just isn't going to work out to well for the fam. My take is we trash the Taliban and go home. Let them govern there own country, if the Taliban take over again, we trash them again.

Deal is in a lot of cases where dealing with straight up cowardice, people who shoot randomly into a crowd or a country or whatever. Stuff that would piss off the pope. Personally I'd bring the troops home now. But I know a bunch of these guys, hell I party with them just about every weekend. That guy I mentioned with two purple hearts and a bronze star for valor. He sells hot dogs out in front of the club I bounce at. Great guy, my best buddy Dave is a three tour decorated vet as well. Jim another one, has the warehouse next to mine, never talks about his experiences.

I don't get what the big discussion is all about.

    I'm out
cheers and best of luck folks
    B

Mock surprise? Maybe trying makes the whole thing evolve a little rather than just leaving the fundamentalists to force their will on the innocent.

Had they got Bin Laden early on, it would be over by now IMO. His being gone decreases the public appetite to persist.

    Yes, defeat.

Its delusional to believe that a foreign power can impose its will on others.

Afghanistan is no different than Iraq or Vietnam.

Those fallen fighters that the Marines are urinating on are FREEDOM FIGHTERS defending their society against foreign domination.

Failure is assured . American will return in defeat , hopefully study the histroy of the world , re take the test and with luck, pass the exam

This time they won't return because the fed won't fund it, not because of any lesson learnt on converting heathen to western morality.
Depends if they run out of rare earths, or they become worth enough.
    Or black Kj's.

Is this you appraisal of all armed conflict Michael?

Is there no circumstance when an outside agent has justification for intervention in internal politics of a sovereign nation?
Any internal power may do anything it wishes to their population as their sovereign right?

How about when military expansion occurs.

Are the perpetrators suddenly 'freedom fighters' as soon as they hang a flag?

Horrors or war- I can't pretend to comment.
From what little I understand of the topic this incident lies more along the lines of a immature prank.
Bad press but not much more.

Immature prank ? More like ignorant, overarmed, great white hunters snapping a picture of their trophy kill. It is replusive.

And yes military strength must only be in defense of your borders, not a tool for global domination. Americas military adventurism will fail.

So when one nation invades another, no one may come to lend aid lest they be accused of pursuing global domination?

And yes- in the record of atrocities that have occurred; a immature prank.

Nations must very carefully choose allies to defend . Entangling alliances must be avoided at all cost.

Never should a righteous, violent, military power like America be allowed to deploy its military might to influence another countries internal affairs .

If Afgans choose to live in the stone age..let them.
