Nor do you make the poor richer by making the rich richer.... which seems to be the basis of most conservative tax and financial arguments these days.

Which hare-brained pundit first came up with the notion that if you give the rich more money, they'll be overwhelmed by generosity and just naturally want to share by giving most of it to their employees?

Got my threads confused. I thought I was in the "America's default" thread.... I should stay off the internet when I'm tired.

Which seems to be most of the time lately. At this stage in my working career, the only realistic way I have of making more money is by volunteering for more overtime. Last year, overtime added up to a third of my base income. But that was still cheaper for my company than hiring another person would have been.

Yet there are those who will accuse me of screwing it over by taking overtime instead of straight pay....

You're lucky. When my boss wanted to cut costs he gave my assistant my job. The assistant couldn't handle it and left, and I got tied down on another job and couldn't return. The last time I was there I had been replaced by 4 graduates.

I'm not lucky; I'm a union member. Although that isn't always a guarantee. Ten or twelve years ago my company managed to eliminate full-time meter readers, and replace each of them with 2.6 part-timers who received no benefits and no paid holidays.

Of course, that was in another local; we transmission workers stick together a little better than that. Over the years, this company has grown and merged repeatedly, until its workers are represented by 6 locals from two different national unions.

Yeah, it's a mess sometimes, just like any federation -- whether of states, unions, school districts, or anything else. Our equivalent of Washington, DC is a Joint Steering Committee....
