hi im michael from arklow sea scouts,
we recently just got our rib back on the water, i understand the hydrolics and steering has just been fixed. The problem is that it takes about seven turns of the wheel to turn the boat to the right but when you turn it back to the left it falls back quite quick and we need to use it as a safty boat and it is not safe with steering like that.
    HELP!!!

What kind of system do you have?

It would seem to have leaked the oil used to operate the rams.

Is there oil on the boat floor.

To be honest with you thats not a very good repair and should be returned if you've paid for it.

It sounds like its low on oil, refil the system and turn the wheel back and forth to self bleed ( get the air out).

Look on the internet for information.

i think the tubes going into the wheel say seadog after that i have no idea, I taught it would have somthing to do with the little knob over the wheel because someone messed with it and the broke it so...

Some Teleflex systems for their larger boats have a knob that changes the lock to lock turns. These systems used to be called Capilano and had cast aluminum helms that were back mounted.

Breaking the knob would only "lock" the system at one turn rate though, and should not make the steering do what you describe.

If it is an outboard and the engine is tilted way down it will steer hard as you describe. If it tilts using a pin manually move the pin up one hole at a time until you get light steering without ventilating the motor. Typical Teleflex Seastar or similar should have 5 to 7 turns so that doesn't sound bad.

Sorry to say that it sounds like you should not be in charge of this boat.

Sell it and buy bicycles before someone gets hurt.

Unless you describe the make and model of your steering, the answers are wild guesses.

No --he's a sea scout leader and he knows nothing of the boats steering where the oil goes or if there is oil. Nor what is the knob thing at the top thats now broken. I would not let any kids go with him. Would he be able to restart this boat mid water, I doubt it. He himself said it is unsafe.

He wants advice, I gave him good sound advise.

There is an accident here,-- I hope I stopped it.

I will not be part of any information encouraging kids going out in this boat with broken steering that just been repaired etc etc etc.

Sounds to me the whole system needs bleeding to get every last bubble of air out of the system both sides , Post some pictures of what and how its all hooked up at the back !!!MOTOR END !!!. :)
Air is number one problem with Hydulics so find the instructions and find the guy that fitted it and make him sit and read before he touchs it to bleed the air out :?:Its real basic and very simple so you might want to sit with him and hold his hand till hes read the subject a couple of times .

Also i have all my certs and i would be safer with kids on the water than you ever would! There was no need for a comment like that especially since you juding me by my age you have guessed that since im a seascout leader im old and should know everything but im only seventeen and still learning so thanks ******
