Waterproof camera for pics and vid?

I want to document my sailing trip from Adelaide to Tasmania and back to Brisbane in November. Some pics and vids would be good. The camera will get wet no doubt. Will I be compromising pic and vid quality if I try to get all these features in one camera?

Any suggestions on a camera?

 

i got my wife a kodak playsport for her birthday, it's a pretty neat HD video camera- hand held and waterproof, also not that expensive.

 

If you're going to spend the money..spend a bit more and get HD so you can watch it on your TV and have it look good.

Check out heer whats available.. There are some brands offering "sport" cameras as waterproof but think boating environment is a bit more demanding what comes to equipment. Some Sea&Sea uw camera is ok to start with..

We bought a Fujifilm Finepix XP10 for on (and therefor most likely in) water use and have used it rafting also. 12Mpixel stills, HD video, waterproof to 3m, digital stablization, almost disposable price.

Note, I would not use this as an underwater camera for any length of time, but it is great to keep in the cockpit or a small boat because of its small size. As Teddy points out, there are specific cameras for real underwater use.

 

Yes definitely go with HD, soon non HD cameras will be gone and youll be behind the times

 

GoPro HD waterproof camera

For rough conditions, the GoPro looks quite a camera. $270 gets 1080p video and 5mp stills or time lapse. It's tiny. And waterproof. I was looking for waterproof housing for my 'real' camera, but I can't find one any good near the price of the whole gopro hd. Anyone using one of the http://gopro.com/ cameras?

 

It's actually UW proof so you can check your anchor with it..

 

A small sensor is going to be noisy in low light. Shots up at the boat would be fun. It says it's waterproof to 180' which would make me feel good using it in really rough wet weather onboard or taking it to 20' (that's my limit!)

Had an opportunity to hold one of the GoPro HD cameras in my hands today. The lack of a zoom lens and big view screen might not replace a "real" camera, but the person showing it to me certainly seemed to have gotten their money and more out of it. I saw the GoPro on their dash and asked about it quickly and we talked for 30 minutes! The possibilities of putting it atop a mast or using a boom over the side to shoot, or a rig to put it under water. The possibilities for this little underwaterproof camera seem endless.

 

I ended up with a panasonic FT2. It worked OK, but one time I left it in a bag for ages without taking off its rubber "condom" after getting salt water on it. Corrosion set in and it has been having issues since. The alloy case does not like being left in stagnant salt water.

 

In a Myer catelogue today was a PANASONIC Lumix DMC-FT3-A for $499 with 12.1 megapixel, 4.6 optical zoom, Full HD movie recording and 12m waterproof... that is the style that will serve well... (Mine is a far cheaper Nikon of similar style - - lense zooms inside the body & it sits in my left trouser pocket easily )
