Pizza Cutter sea trial is complete. Over 400 miles in 6 days. Started bad, ended up very good. We left OC MD. Sunday 7-3 @6 am with outriggers 6 nice rods and case of bait, plan to troll to VA. Beach @ 40-60 mile offshore. About 15 miles offshore stopped for break, when I put back in gear-a noise so loud I knew it was big trouble! Put on mask and dive in-tie bar had come loose from STB side and had smacked PORT prop. Damage was minimal but I had to decide to putt home on 1 engine or remove tie bar. Seas running 3'-4' and just me and grlfriend aborad. I was able to remove tie bar after 30 minutes of diving- very ugly and dangerous. Thought about goin on with no tie bar- not sure if feasible, (everybody got a tie bar?) so we headed in. Still only bout 8 am. had friends waitig with trailer. Right at ramp Port engine sticks in reverse. Getting ugly, it is about 9 am and really hot and muggy and I am pissed (at myself). Back boat in shop and look for replacement bolt. Found 1 in my spare steering cylinder. Needed to release steering hoses use come-a-long to pull drives together. I guess tie bar is an important component. Get tie bar fixed. Check on tranny (boat fully loaded with coolers and gear). In luck-only small screw on cable keeper had fallen out and cable was slipping thru keeper. Screw was metric and could not be obtained on a Sunday. Drilled all the way thru and put a screw with lock nut in place. I like it better than original way. Covered in P/S fluid and sweat @ 11 am. Jumped in shower, had boat back in by 11:30 am and on our way. Seas real snotty by now so we run the coast 110 miles to VA. Beach. In by bout 3 pm. Spend nite and check forecast for goin south to Oregon Inlet. Weather and fishin report not good so we turn north 80 miles to Tangier Island Va. Called ahead for bushel large crabs. Get there in time to prep crabs and go to a big July 4 beach party and fireworks. Back to crab shack and steam crabs and drink beer. Life is good Spend 2 nites on Tangier (hard place to leave). Go scenic route up Chesapeake Bay and thru Honga River to Tilghman Island about 80 miles. Another cool spot. The bay is gourgeous this time of year. Great visibilty. Stay 1 nite and leave next day 25 miles to Annapolis for lunch and and maybe overnite but no slips available. Waterfront is shut down while TV commercial being shot. Move north considering Baltimore but so pretty we keep riding. Decide to go all the way to top of bay thru C&D Canal to Delaware bay. Wasted some time getting fuel (another story) so we on mission to make Lewes Dl. by nite. Delaware Bay not like Chesapeake. It was rough, and dirty and crowded with big ships, on top of that weather got nasty. Had to put hammers down to make Lewes by nite. Pulled in @ bout 8 pm. Traveled bout 140 miles that day. Spend nite in Lewes and get up Friday and head South back to OC Md. Round trip about 460 miles, bout 22 hours on engines. Running very good. sometimes we cruised as high as 40 mph but usually 34 mph was sweet spot. As usual got repair list started but none of it is engine or tranny or drive related. Real happy with refurb, lots of compliements on paint-really shines. Girlfriend went off on cabin. She insisted that anything that may have been breathed on by another girl had to go. We may have to rename to SS Bed & Bath. It made for some cozy sleepin with all hathces covered and A/C set on 69 degrees. Been gone for a week so spend weekend around house and shop then power up in office Monday.
Steve, Keys are great. We kept boat in Islamorada on off for 15 years before we got house in PBG. You can see why I go to trouble to trailer south wheneve possible. Remember I can find you dock in Palm Beach in residential area on the cheap if you try to pull it off. We b planning some Bahama crusin soon and plan to travel with others who got area knowledge. Be great if you could make it. You too Swamp-how you makin out? Tom, I see you in deep with Merlins-ouch!-I been there before. Be careful that you don't spend the price of rebuilt Cats. Harley Diesel MPG

BTW my new pressure feed fuel sending units did not work with my old guages, bummer-especially on new tanks and long trip. I kept note pad of all fuel/mileage. Have not topped off yet but looks like, as usual, just a hair over 1 mpg. Could perhaps get 1.3 goin slower but I think that as good as it gets.

 

Harley in Texas

Had not heard from Martin in Texas with 46' Harley. I once so it on Craigslist for $199,000. Check out EBay #190554951312. It looks like the drives from that boat are for sale and the owner is goin to re-power it with O/B's. That will be quite interesting to see how that turns out. Anybody know what be goin on with that boat??
Heads up to all- I mentionned that I lost a nut/bolt from tie bar cause I forgot to tighten-wrong!. I was painting drives recently and checked some of big lock nuts on steering and tie bar. Found 2 nuts that had lost thier "lock" strength, came of easy like a regular nut. Don't know if it be wear from on/offs or just old age or maybe salt and conditions deteriorate nylon after while. Anyway double check those big nut/bolts on drives. Losing 1 can be disaster. I am getting some new ones. Also learned lesson on lift pumps-must be plumbed with correct up down sequence or lift ram has big thunk! Drives still go up/down at correct speed just noisey. Wasted bunch of time finding out.

 

It's pretty quiet around here! I assume it's because we are all busy boating. Well, I thought I would share a few pics from my latest trip.
Myself and a few friends decided Lake Powell would be a new place to go. We had heard a lot about it, but none of us had ever made the trip. So we loaded up and headed out for a 1,100 mile road trip to the Utah Arizona border. The drive was brutal. There are least two dozen major hills in Southern Oregon, Idaho, and Utah. I thought we could make it in about 20 hours, but 26 was more like it.

If you have never been to Lake Powell, it is something that you nshould do at least once. The scenery is literally out of this world. You have the feeling that are on another planet with all the red rock. No trees, no grass, very little dirt. Weather was in the high 90's and the water temp was a steady 80. After about 5 days on the water we realized that we just did not have enough time to really explore the whole lake. We followed many canyons to the very end, but only scratched the surface.

We didn't encounter any wanna be killers or small town cops on this trip.

Harley 42

Hello Piizzacutter. This is my harley. On rebuild number 3 .I have owned the boat for about 10 years. So far have been through the hull, replaced the transom with coosa board, reman 3126 cats and 6 blade rollas. The list goes on and on. Now we are going through the stringers stiffining up the boat and yes i know thats kind of backwards now. Saw your pics of the bow thruster install and i would be interested to see some of your stringer reinforcements. Basicially the boat has nothing forward of the fuel tanks. Performance is good. Cruise 31 to 33kts and 39kts on the pin.

 

Welcome to the board Sharper! That is a very beautiful boat you have there. It always amazes me how different one Harley is from another.

 

Hey Steve, great pics of your recent trip. Very few 42' boats can go road trippin for 1000 + miles! After 20 years I don't love the trips as much but still look forward to makin MD. to FLA. runs. Your tow rig is awesome-tell me some more bout weights, ratings, power train, MPG,etc. How bout trailer tires-what u using? I usually go thru 1-2 tires on 1000 mile trip. Great to see you using boat. We been putting some time on Pizza Cutter. Runnin great. Only bummer is that a few spots on Awl-Grip have textured up like orange peel, a few weeks after completion. They are hard to see but I know they are there. Must have been poor prep work?
Sharper, welcome! Nice boat-very nice power. Those Cats can go forever. Your cabin looks just like mine did in 1994! You gotta get some forward stringers in plus some frames. I will send you prints I got back then, but we have deviated and improved much off the original plans over the years. Where u be located? Send ur address to pizzacutter@comcast.net. Looks like lot of work but it is doable and is good time to improve other systems. Be glad to help if possible.

This was a test trip in preparation for FL. I'm not sure I have it in me tow the boat that far, we will see.
The truck is a Chevrolet 4500 Kodiak. I bought it as a cab and chassis and added the dually pick up bed. GVW is 26,000lbs. 26,001 or more requires a CDL in WA. That I wanted to avoid. It is powered by a stanard Duramax with a Allison 5 speed auto. Plenty of power and ran flawless for the entire trip. the truck weighs in about 10,500 empty and boat trailer weigh 18,000. By the time we were loaded for the trip I'm sur e we were around 29,000lbs.
I put new tires on the trailer last year. I don't remember what their exact ratings are, but I know they are being used about ten percent t. Over their rating. I replaced all the bearings and installed a electric over hydraulic brake system. What a difference! I can adjust the gain from the cab while going down 6 percent grades. I kept the speed down to sixty when it got much abov e 90 degrees. I'm sure that helped on the tires. We also aired them up to max pressure which was 80 psi. We stopped a lot and always checked tire temp and bearing temp with a infrared thermometer.
Overall we had a great trouble e free trip

 

stringer systems

Shawn, package from design architect is in mail to you. The most important thing you gotta do in cabin is stringers runnin fron to back and frames goin sideways. The vertical board that forms the "kick plate" of the sofas (this is what your heels would hit if you were sitting on sofa) would form the inside of the stringer. We started well up under the v-berth and stood 3/4" plywood up on its end. This was done twice with about 2" clear in between. Once those are in place we glassed over them with 3 layers. this formed a "hollow" stringer. We then drilled 1 1/2" holes every 1' and poured in hi-density foam. After foam is dry, trim off top and glass over holes. It makes a beast of a wood/foam/fiberglass beam or stringer to run all the way back to the cabin steps. After you look at prints, get back to me with any questions. You always welcome to come to OC MD to look @ Pizza Cutter.

Spoke with H Harley the other day (he helpin me get new windsheild) He says his 40' CC bout to go in water. He has the 46' CC Portifino from Key West in his shop for re-furb. Previous owner had removed arnesons and made inboard. HH lookin for set of arnesons for that boat.
