The value of time

I don't believe that marginal utility theory fully embraces the value of time -- in the sense that it doesn't fully recognize opportunity cost, and how opportunity changes over time.

If you're laughing -- that was meant to be funny. If you're not laughing -- wait.

 

Ask 20 year old lying in bed at 11,30 he has all the time in the world and no money.

Ask the old guy that gets up 5 am and is booking holidays and cruises at any cost while his health holds out.

Thats the difference.

 

That is the difference. All people don't weight the value of another sunrise with the same calculus.

You can substitute another word for "sunrise" as it fits your personality

 

We expect to be payed for our time when we work for other people with writing reports, building roads, arresting criminals or whatever. The same goes when professional boatbuilders build boats for other people. On the other hand, we accept to pay for spending our time on vacations, theaters and pleasure cruises.

So, for a professional report-writer, pencil-lifter and email-answerer, what is the value of my time when I am allowed to enjoy myself with practical boatbuilding? To be honest, I would accept to pay money (but not the social consequences) to work on my boat instead of doing my duty and attending certain cultural happenings.

We just have to hope that the authorities don´t figure this out and put a pleasure tax on time spent on amateur boat building. Maybe we should continue wining about the value of time and the horrors of sanding.

As animals who are obsessed by time, we make little good use of it. We even make poor use of that small portion of it we do understand.

I accept your reasonably compelling argument that impending death will put everything in perspective. The observations sort of punctuate how silly we are -- and reinforce how unlikely we are to make good use of our fortune.

I don't ever want to know what the clock says. If I don't know what time it is, I'm not paying attention.

 

We'll figure out a way to net the gains and losses

 

We're certainly making good use of our time now, huh?

 

Considering the people I come across in the normal course of living -- It's always a pleasure to join in with this crowd.

A pressure washer and a few minutes time. A quarter inch of light dust on everything. Not an uncommon event in the state, just a little unusual this far north. I was surprised it got as much press coverage as it did.

 

It was spectacular.
